Hmmm, I think writing a handful of truly great albums trumps longevity and a career full of good albums.
Hand on heart, Weller hasn't made a genuinely great solo album nor ever made a genuinely great Style Council album.
But even by that measure, i guess the Kinks had four or five great albums and not a lot since.
So, McCartney. But he didn't write all those great albums alone.
Van Morrison- I think Astral Weeks is better than anything anyone above has done. And TB Sheets off the debut is better than any song. For me, Moondance, Tupelo Honey and Veedon Fleece are great albums.
Maybe Van is the man.
I'm motivated now to dig into his 80s stuff and Them (Shenandoah- what's a good starting place with Them? I've never delved back)

Alright, fine. No one else has said it, and he’s written some of the greatest songs and albums of anyone ever.
Pete Townshend.

will I be banned if I say Damon Albarn? That's not the worst shout ever. Considering the variety of projects. Putting Blur and Gorillaz to one side; there's the Good, the Bad & the Queen, Africa Express, Mali Music (although no idea how much song writing he did for the last two), that thing he did with Flea, and at least two operas...oh and a solo album)

If you lost WWII and your economy were entirely based on coal, I could see Billy Bragg being your best songwriter.

All jokes aside. It’s obviously Mark E Smith.

I've recently come to the realisation it is Paul Weller What do you think? Fight me This is an even worse take than when Lino claimed Dwayne’s cover of Heroes was better than the original. You’ve trashed what little remained of your rep on this forum. I’d hate to be stuck in a WhatsApp group with you

i'll allow northern irelandvan morrison is another who had a golden period but hasn't really been relevant for decades. even more so now hes an anti vax loon. Good to know that hundreds of years of violence hasn't been a total waste of time and we can be involved in your thread.
