never mind todays under-rated players (thread inspired by byram)
Nigel Martyn
Steve Bould Ronny Johnson
Darren Anderton Dennis Wise Antonio Conte Paul Scholes*
Robbie Fowler (yes i AM being serious here)* Roberto Mancini (Ditto)*
* Just because you were rated highly doesn't mean you still weren't underrated

Andy Cole HAS to be in there.
Case for Neville Southall being the goalie as well, everyone knows he was good but not many people realise he was the greatest of all time.
ROnny Johnsen, DEnnis Wise and Mancini shouldn't be there.
I get what you're saying about Scholes but still think most people would have him in the all time PRemier League xi. Or at least as a sub.
Nigel Winterburn Tim Sherwood Darren Peacock Warren Barton David Weir (still playing but meh) Andrei Kanchelskis

yeah he's the ultimate one, first one on my list class player he had such good technique. that volley in the 3-3 draw against sweden is probably my favourite england goal in my lifetime. his injury record was exaggerated as well

Rob Lee. In a day where the likes of James Milner cost over £20m it would be interesting to see how much Rob Lee would be worth today.

*i'm listing players who were technically very good but who many still don't fully appreciate just how good they are/were. The other way of doing it is listing under-appreciated players

Bergomi (forgotten his first name, Inter Milan defender, class and underrated) Giuseppe, probably not that underrated in Italy but over here when people talk about great modern Italian defenders he never gets a mention which is odd as he sits quite comfortably up there with any of them. Slightly off-topic but on the subject of Inter greats, someone who spans yesteryear and er, modernyear Javier Zanetti. I know he doesn't scream 'underrated' but when you consider the reputation someone like Maldini (deservedly) has, then Zanetti who is still putting in genuine star turns (like marking Messi out of games) as he approaches 40 probably deserves as high regard as Maldini who, let's face it, was filling in and doing a job in his last few years. Neville Southall, Craig Hignett and Marian Pahars are all ones I'd second, which is not to say I disagree with any others (well OK Andy Cole and Le Tissier, very good but I can't think of either as particularly underrated) as my memories of some of them are pretty sketchy. Club bias here admittedly but Steve Howey was a cracking centre back

Andy Cole is the correct answer for this one. Glenn Hoddles half baked opinion that he needed 5 chances to score one completely distorted the average fans opinion of him. He's easily in the top 3 strikers I've seen at United in my life time, love him dearly. Ricardo Carvahlo has always been highly rated but he never really got the plaudits Terry received, despite imo being a much more important player for Chelsea. Dirty bastard mind . I'm not sure if I'm remembering him with rose tinted specs but I remember always being amazed by Ian Woans left foot when I was younger, think he lacked pace but was a quality player imo.
