These are my thoughts on stuff I saw from this year. Some will be 2009 for American audiences but they were either given a UK cinema release this year or didn't get one at all so the DVD release was the first time we'd of got to see it legally.
01:
Gainsbourg (Vie héroïque) Best film I saw all year. Thought it was wonderful & the balance between biopic & the more surreal moments was balanced perfectly.
02:
Red Hill Unless it slipped straight under the radar I'm not even sure if it's been released here yet. I saw it in August at FrightFest, was superb. Like a more stripped down version of No Country For Old Men, simple revenge type plot done so well.
03:
The RoadThink it came out in 09 everywhere else but didn't make it over here until early 2010, fantastically bleak.
04:
MacheteWas always going to be high on my list weren't it?
If ever a movie had been made for my eyes than it was this. I'm really upset it's flopped as I was hoping it would of sparked all the other grindhouse trailers to be made into fully fledged films.
05:
Κυνόδοντας [Dogtooth]Original, Bizarre, disturbing, funny. A completely unique film which I liked when I saw it then couldn't stop thinking about it for weeks, I've a feeling when I watch it again it could be my number one.
06:
The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New OrleansEverybody knows I can't stand Nicolas Cage but he was really good in this (minus a few scenes which had me laughing out loud) Being a kind of remake of a film I loved I was ready to shoot this down but it really surprised me & despite having the same principle ideas as the original it was a totally different experience.
07:
The ExpendablesI know a few on here that weren't completely sold on this but for me it delivered absolutely everything I could of hoped for. an old-skool blast with all my old favourites. I love you Sly can't wait for the Death Wish remake
08:
Mr. NiceThis seemed to go completely unnoticed. Rhys Ifans was perfect as Howard Marks, was really funny in places & David Thewlis was superb too.
09:
FrozenAdam Green (no not that one) I think could really become a really good medium budget genre film maker. Was one of those where you know exactly whats going to happen from the second you switch it on but it was just so well done that I ended up loving it more than perhaps I should of.
10:
Hatchet IIAdam Green again. First one was ok but this one really delivered. Worth checking out for anyone who enjoys a good old fashioned slasher.
11:
Separado!Gruff Rhys's road movie, not the psychedelic blast I expected but more an educational warm feeling film.
12:
Black Dynamite This came out ages ago but only just got a release over here Blaxsploitation piss-take movie, great fun.
The last few I liked but kind of slightly disappointed with.
13:
TetroI fucking love Vincent Gallo, for me he's one of the best actors around, such a shame he probably doesn't get the parts he should due to being a bit of a loon. Was a real slow burner which should of delivered but I just never connected with it & the ending felt forced to me. Worth a watch though.
14:
[REC] 2 I liked but not half as much as the first one. Still 989898989 times better than Cloverfield (welcome back dan xxx)
15:
Shutter Island Didn't get the hype for this one, felt it was completely predictable yet performances & production values were high enough to make it a decent watch.
16:
FBritish slaher-type deal set in a school. Saw it at frightfest not sure if it's coem out yet, well done just didn't grab me as anything special
17:
PrimalDecent Aussy Virus movie, final 20 minutes let it down by introducing some of the worst CGI ever
Not a film but a cracking documentary on a franchise which I've loved since a Kid,
Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy. 4 hours of in depth interviews/facts & so on, really good watch.
This lot I saw and didn't care for:
The Runaways - rock-biopic. About as average as they come. Catch it if its on TV otherwise I wouldn't bother.
Dead Cert - Saw this at fright fest, starred Dan Sullivan from Eastenders
was a cockney vampire film
So bad I almost enjoyed it, also has a 17 second cameo from danny Dyer.
Inception - I'm still shocked anybody likes this. I was fucking fuming when I left the cinema, a complete waste of 8 quid. HATED it.
Srpski film - The most controversial film of the year, also one of the worst. Went out to break every taboo known to film & succeeded, unfortunately never succeeded at being any good.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) - Was better than I thought it would be, I guess it was fun just a bit average.
Isle Of DogsWorst film I saw all year, awful.
Oh & I watched 20 minutes of kick-ass & felt like smashing the TV in so switched it off. Completely agree with Dan, I've no interest in seeing that cunt save the world.
Also, no interest in seeing the social network, not my scene.
