Wigan's support has always been pretty rubbish but it is a rugby town after all

Try to be a bit more wrong.

For a start we took more than 10k. And considering we average bigger crowds than the rugby, football shirts outnumber and outsell rugby shirts in the towns sports shops by a huge percentage, football gets more local media coverage, there is far far more saturday/sunday amatuer league football played compared to rugby....how is it a rugby town? Or you basing it on the fact you saw our rugby team win a minority cup on tv once or twice?

And considering we have 7 premiership teams less than an hour away from us, a population of just 160k and have only been in the football league just over 30 years, our support is good.

I'm saying it as a clueless southerner obviously - historically Wigan have a more successful rugby team than they do football, in recent years the football club have done well to sustain their success and place in the Prem. Yeah historically Wigan has had a more successful rugby team but we overtook them in crowds, local & global media coverage and more during the last decade.

Gillingham is about 40 miles from TCOTU, its not really the same as 15 miles or less to Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton & Blackburn.

They probably have - they probably all came to the Shrewsbury play-off final But its not relevant as relevant really, Wembley would be shit if only the hardcore 6/7000 turned up. Plus I was trying to refer to the fact that Wigan sent tickets back for the major final at the level they were playing in

Alas - we are a small club and I don't dispute that. We averaged around 9,000 in our Championship years, which was higher than Blackpool last year for example.

You said an hour away - so I was merely quoting where you can get to from Gillingham to in that time period.

The north-east is saturated with big and fairly successful teams and those 18k are a credit. I just wonder how many would stick around if you went down. It would be a similar story for us if we were in the same position

About the same percentage as most other clubs who get relegated probably. It probably wouldnt be a massive drop because the novelty of the premiership has gone for us now and a lot of our fans are bored with the constant struggle of relegation battles every season. Its great for one or two years as Blackpool are experiencing, but some of our fans honestly would prefer the Championship where you at least stand a chance.
