"Quentin Tarantino is reportedly keen to cast Will Smith as the lead in his new film Django Unchained.
Variety claims that Tarantino wrote the lead role of Django with Smith in mind, and that the I Am Legend star has already been informally offered the part.
Earlier this month pages from the upcoming Western's script were leaked online, revealing that the film will follow an escaped slave called Django, who teams up with a German bounty hunter to lead a revenge mission on his former master in an attempt to free his wife from slavery.
Inglorious Basterds star Christoph Waltz is already said to have been cast as the bounty hunter Dr King Schultz, while Pulp Fiction lead Samuel L Jackson may also have a supporting role in the film.
Smith is believed to be willing to take a salary cut from his usual asking price of $20 million in order to be involved with the project, in the same way that Brad Pitt accepted a pay cut to star in Tarantino's last film Inglorious Basterds."

I'd complain & give it FFS WHY etc but Q.T has a history of casting people that originally give you that reaction then completely surprise you. Many were moaning about Brad Pitt but then it turned out he was great & uma thurman starring in Kill Bill was another WTF where Q.T was proven right. Still, Will Smith I've a feeling this is a rumour & nothing more though. Surely Big Willy would object to starring in a film that will more than likely be full of very violent scenes? I'm so excited

Why exactly do they have to take a pay cut? It's not like Tarantino films are short on publicity, popularity?

True but I would of thought a western in 2011 won't make nearly as much money as the usual Will Smith saves the world blockbuster therefor financially I guess he's not worth his usual fee.

Why exactly do they have to take a pay cut? It's not like Tarantino films are short on publicity, popularity? True, but the cost to make a Tarantino film is much much less. His films cost a fraction of what it costs to make Smith's typical big things. IB cost 80 million to make, in comparison, I Am Legend cost around 200 million just to make. Its a huge difference and considering DJango will probably be no more than 100 to make, paying Will so much of that is silly, especially when Tarantino's largest box office is only 120 million (Basterds).

Many were moaning about Brad Pitt but then it turned out he was great & uma thurman starring in Kill Bill was another WTF where Q.T was proven right. I thought Uma was a perfect choice before and after final product. She has a proven success with QT and is believable enough to pull that role off even going in only knowing its a revenge story. Daryl Hannah got more "WTF" at that time, as well as David Carradine. His biggest WTF to me was Mike Myers and the initial rumor of Adam Sandler as The Bear Jew, which I still would've liked to have seen. His detractors tend to come from when he casts has beens, i.e. Travolta was nothing at the time Pulp Fiction came out and has worked constantly since. Pam Grier hadnt been seen in decades before Jackie Brown. Brad Pitt was definitely a WTF, but it worked. I think Will Smith can work too if this is true. Just dont cast Tom Cruise.
