Having just seen Mahoney's post on the blog thesoapboxx.info/2010/07/30/eitheror/ , and given that it seems he has still yet to start watching either of them, I figured we could give him a hand here, as well as have some pure class discussion on them both. To me, they are both 10/10. Genuine pieces of high art that are simply unmatched in terms of television shows. Separating them is as impossible as choosing between your two favourite albums. But thats not to say they are similar, because they are definitely not. I'd be pretty confident in anyone that they'll love them both, but as you rightly say, they'll take up months of your free time so you gotta know where to start. First one I watched was The Wire then quickly followed onto The Sopranos. But I'd say go for The Sopranos. It sounds a cliche, but The Wire is truly like a great book, completely Dickensian. Its what makes it great, but it can also be a daunting prospect to tuck into. I know I took a fortnight 'off' in between every season, just to get my head around it. Not so much to get my head around the story, but the themes, setting, metaphor, morality are far bigger a part of The Wire than its actual plot. And its some heavy shit, takes it out of you. It's the kind of high-brow crap that T.V gets so wrong such a lot of the time, but its really nailed here, every time. Thats not to say The Sopranos doesn't have all that, and arguably more. But its not what drives the show. The characters are cooler, the bitches are hotter and the cars are faster. Both shows have absolutely immense dialogue, to the point where you just wish you could listen to the characters shoot the shit all day. But no-one is as endearing as Tony Soprano imo. Could just watch him host a barbeque with his mates for a few hours and I'd be happy. The Wire doesn't have anyone who completely hogs every scene he's in like him, and it is one of the reasons I'd start with THE SOPRANOS. Hope you haven't started watching either of them yet now though

I agree with matthew. The T character is unparalleled. Imo, television should live and die by it's standard. It is a heavy task, and The Wire took a different approach, albeit brilliant. But I think we can all agree that a character makes a show.
If you are looking for a show that is airing, I suggest Don Draper.

The Sopranos edges it for me. But both are the greatest of all time.
Nect time i watch The Wire, I will probably favour that.
What is without doubt is Tony Soprano is the greatest TV character of all time

I've gradually pulled a re-watch of both these series in the last 10 months. Probably my 5th viewing of the "The Sopranos" and likely my 3rd for "The Wire".
para has obviously watched and enjoyed both, but she doesn't re-watch like I tend to do.
One fun thing I noticed on my last re-watch of "The Sopranos", watch the series finale, then start E01S01, the difference in his accent is shocking. (I skipped S01 in the rewatch then went back to seeit after S06, dunno why really)

Have you watched "TopBoy" bruv? It's an East TCOTU version of "The Wire" with similar themes without ever straying into parody or just being shit. The new series on Netflix is up there with the "The Wire" and "The Sorpranos" IMHO. The first two (also on Netflix) are wicked as well.
#Drake #Peas

Kind of put of by so much british gangster stuff, couldn't get past the cliche, although I knew Top Boy was not gonna be run of the mill gash. Will check it out.

It leans heavily on The Wire, probably to a fault. It doesn't feature any wafty Danny Dyer type stuff (unfortunately). I was worried the Drake influence was going to mean more "action" but it has kept it lovely slow pace and attempt to show the effect the lifestyle has on the people involved and society. Defintely start with the two summerhouse series though.
It feels legit and has some really great acting. Kano in the latest series is really amazing.

Recently watched the sopranos for the 6th time, it just keeps getting better.
I'm blocking anyone who tries to compare another "bruv gangster" movie/series to The Sopranos/The Wire.
A genre made for shit people.
