Marriage is or can be defined by the state depending on your religious beliefs. The Catholic church, for instance, find marriage a sacrament. Meaning I could receive the sacrament through the church and not sign a legal document.

That said, I love my girlfriend. We both dislike the state. We both have no interest in the church. The benefits of marriage, as far as we can tell, are minimal.
