So, a compilation soundtrack LP stuffed with previously released singles is 'braver' than the White Album. Right.

So, a compilation soundtrack LP stuffed with previously released singles is 'braver' than the White Album. Right. musically, it is. It has Strawberry Fields Forever, Blue Jay Way, I Am the Walrus, Flying (the first Beatles' official instrumental)...very risky stuff. Plus singles like All You Need is Love and Strawberry Fields Forever were very original and unheard for that time. Yes they were previously released a few months before, but it's not that the White Album has a more elevated concept behind it beside being a "collection of songs written and recorded this year". A lot of the songs on the White Album are great, but I don't see what makes it "brave" -- it's a pretty straightforward record...

PEDANT ALERT:
the magical mystery tour is an EP that got re-issued with some singles and b sides on it.

As of lately for me it's been... 1) Please Please Me (I love the energy of the first album) 2) Abbey Road 3) White Album

PEDANT ALERT: the magical mystery tour is an EP that got re-issued with some singles and b sides on it. Correct. Even though it has 3 of my 5 favourite fab tunes on it, it's not an album in the context we're talking about. And the right answer is 'revolver' anyway.

I'd say Let It Be and Abbey Road. Both. Conflicting, opposite, decline but glory. Brilliant.

Help and Rubber Soul
Edit: Have to add Abbey Road, if not only for Here Comes the Sun.

Help, Magical Mystery Tour, and White Album are the ones I listen to most, but I love it all really, been listening to them ever since I can remember. Had Past Masters 2 on in the car the other day gan to work, never felt so good gan into work on a Monday, but Paperback Writer, Rain, Revolution, that'll do that to you!
I think the ultimate moment in the Beatles discography has to be Paperback Writer/Rain actually, now that I think of it, that is their finest release, fucking incredible.

was talking with a scouse mate of mine the other day and he pointed out how some of the Beatles songs that were amazing in the beginning got ruined by a too huge production/orchestration -- the original demo of Something is a brilliant instance

If you touch George Martin we're gonna have trouble... I don't really think many Beatles songs suffered from bad production, it's just we've heard them to death.
But yeah, good version that one.

I think "ruined" is the wrong word there, it's more a a testament to just how good they were as songwriters that the tunes work with almost any arrangement. I struggle to think of anything where Martin's production makes the song rather than embellishing it. I do like that demo of Something though, even if the middle 8 was ditched for a very good reason.
