Yeah just thought it was a let down, if he was going to be killed - which I believe he probably would have been, why not just show us? It felt like being cheated out of it for sake of being controversial. I remember being disappointed at the time, so much so that I never bothered rewatching it

Well the screen goes to black cause it was Tony's POV and he got whacked from the back of his head, and when you die, shit goes black innit? The entire scene constantly showed Tony's POV, so it made perfect sense to me not to show anything. I actually re-watch that scene on YouTube about once a month

the way they had the bell on the door as a device to switch from tonys POV to the viewers POV was unreal. showed how paranoia-ridden he had become.
can't imagine that ending episode will ever be topped by anything tbh

I was going to watch this program after I watched my Sopranos & The Wire box-sets, however I am yet to start either as I'm currently wrapped up in series 5 of Everybody Loves Raymond. Gripping.

Yeah WTF I also thought The Sopranos' ending was actually quite brilliant. It is brilliant. But no way should every tv show end like that just cos the Sopranos did (thinking out loud here, not saying you are actually saying this by the way) The folk that don't like the Sopranos ending I can understand their point of view that it's a cop out by the writers not to show him getting killed. If you have invested so much time and effort into the writing of the show then maybe have the balls to finish it off. However I love the ambiguity of the ending, fucked with my head at the time. Breaking Bad didn't and shouldn't have ended any other way IMO. The amount of twists etc that it had throughout it was fitting it ended the way it did

Soprano's ending is sheer genius, agreed. Never understood the criticism it gets. I've heard people calling it a cop out but it's crafted masterfully. I didn't hate the gun car per se, but the manner it was executed irked me. Maybe I missed a few things in the episode, but the amount of things that had to go right, that were out with Walt's control, for that plan to work just seemed far too convenient. If I was watching it right, Walt pretty much knew the Nazis weren't going to take up his offer, and they were likely to kill him. So how did he know they'd ALL be in that building, and how did he know they weren't just going to whack him in the car? Also, he's being given strict instructions where to park his car by a mentalist nazi who is itching to kill him, yet he's happy to let Walt park the car in his own chosen spot. And they wouldn't search the car!? Anyway, I loved the episode. I've loved this season and love the entire show. Breaking Bad has always had a cartoony element to it so it can get away with a lot. But gun car just didn't feel right to me.

The folk that don't like the Sopranos ending I can understand their point of view that it's a cop out by the writers not to show him getting killed. I guess I understand people thinking it's a cop out, but it really isn't, when you think about it. The entire series revolved around Tony and his life, his dreams, his traumas, etc, it makes perfect sense to end it the moment his life ended, if that makes sense. It's actually very well executed and incredibly tense, too, I honestly love watching that scene over and over when I'm bored. Don't stop--

This is interesting:
I was not particularly familiar with this song beforehand, but when I was watching it I thought it just sounded absolutely perfect for the end.

I have to say initially the finale left me feeling a bit flat, largely probably because this show has spoiled us so much in confounding our expectations, so aside from the Elliot and Gretchen bit I pretty much saw most of that coming (including the ricin in the stevia bit, which I think a lot of people saw coming).
Also personally we always knew Walt was going to die one way or another so the far more interesting question was what was going to happen to the money and that was largely dealt with early on (I know Jack etc had much more money).
But it's hard to really argue with it, everyone got the ending they deserved, initially it seems Walt "won" but really putting things into perspective apart from Walt Jr getting money (and that through a charity foundation) he wouldn't have wanted any of this when he set out. It was a safe ending in some ways but some crazy twist might have looked contrived.
A good ending overall but not one of the all time best episodes. It's been a fantastic final series all in all but I do think it's suffered a bit at times for having to tell so much in 8 episodes. But really, this is comparing Breaking Bad against itself rather than other shows, it's been absolutely magnificent. 68 shows (around 60 hours or so) of some of the greatest drama ever seen on screen for a similar production price to most 90 minute Hollywood films. Incredible.

I somehow managed to get through all of them in a month, timed it absolutely perfect with watching the 2nd last episode on the Sunday afternoon the final episode aired. Absolutely mind blowing stuff. Series 4 is seriously amazing, the best series I've ever watched of any tv program. Its weird the feeling I've got from watching since I only just started watching them, but i'm absolutely gutted its finished, as if I've watched it from the start. So many great characters, the only ones I'm not keen on are the wives. Walter and Jessie are such a great mix together. Fucking love Saul Goodman, Mike and Hector though. Gus was the absolute perfect villain. I

I'd known about that for a while now, one of my friends is actually the colorist on that series and he's been filling us in on it, and from what he's told us, it is nothing compared to the original (obviously) but he hasn't said it sucks, either. It is not set in the desert (which is bullshit), instead it is set on the savannah outside of Bogota. I am going to try to watch it (if it becomes available online). That trailer looks pants though. There was a Colombian remake of Grey's Anatomy which I saw on TV a few years ago, and it wasn't entirely terrible, but knowing the story lines and plot twists, it just wasn't any fun for me.

I just finished it last night, amazing programme.
The ending was perfect, as was the ending of The Sopranos to whichever heathen disputed that.
Actually very similar shows in my opinion.
The Sopranos has more comedy in it's writing and more rounded and better characters, but BB has a much higher intensity, but both are basically asking the viewer to make as assumption about a person who is good at heart while being a cunt at times in Tony and Walt.

I'll make the argument that Tony S. was not good at heart. He was a mean and nasty prick 95% of the time he was depicted. Not to mention a despicable father and even worse husband. Cold blooded murderer. He sawed people into pieces with batting an eye. Racist. He fucking plugged Christopher's nose.
