Since we parted, I have become somewhat obsessed with Coronation Street. I know I've come half a century late to the game, but for most of my life there wasn't the technology to watch it over here.
As a long time fan of EastEnders, I never understood how that show couldn't be considered the epitome of British drama. After about two weeks of watching Corrie, it was terribly obvious why EastEnders is inferior: In Walford, the characters don't get a chance to breathe. It's one tragedy then on to the next. While there's no shortage of hardship in Weatherfield, there are always a few characters with light storylines amid all the turmoil. And a sense of humor that's sorely missing from EastEnders.
I've only been a regular viewer since the tram crash, but have enjoyed going back and seeing some classic Corrie on YouTube to better understand backstories and check out characters I missed out on.
I know this is an Anglo-centric board. Anyone have any thoughts? Favorite characters? Plotlines, etc?

He's probably the greatest character in British TV ... ever, so he is.

Carla is such a hot slut.
Steve McDonald is a don as well.
I would say this is far from a vintage era of Corrie though. There's a lot of shit in Corrie at the moment and it is a long way behind the true number one soap - Emmerdale Fucking Farm.

As far as (fairly) recent love triangles go, I really enjoyed the Graeme / Xin / Tina sotryline, even though the girl who played Xin couldn't act. Or spell Sheen.
And I have to say I like Sunita and Karl together, though it's obviously not going to last.

Steve McDonald is a don as well. Mark E Smith talks highly, and is full of praise for Steve McDonald in his book. High praise indeed

You know Jim McDonald right? Yeah, I got to see him during his brief return before he got sent down for robbing a bank. I saw Jim and this scene being filmed in the flesh in Bolton town centre a couple of weeks before it was aired, and needless to say his classic leather jacket was on full show. I didn't know it was being filmed initially, we were only trying to head to the train station yet the road was blocked due to the filming. Jim McDonald - equally powerful at holding up banks and holding up pedestrians.

Don't make an effort to watch it but whenever I do catch the odd episode it seems to fit like a comfy old pair of slippers. Steve McDonalds great and I like anything to do with Craig Charles (and if nothing else it's worth a watch for the quality of flange, ditto emmerdale, with Carla being the queen bee. Lovely stuff)

I've seen Sunita in real life. Very attractive in real life. Also saw Leanne's sister in 42s once (tonya?)
Don't really watch it though.
Samir was the best character of all time - "I love you dehdree". Awesome.

I have to agree. I missed the Mike Baldwin years, but have watched enough of the old stuff to be able to say that I wished they had a character of his type today. So well acted and so devious without apology.
