I wasn't very excited with those two tracks on their own, but digging the album so far and both fit nicely. And like you say, wise production.

320 rip on exy.
Listened to David Live (1974) today, really poor. The recording is flat as a pancake and he has his soul band so the sax and keyboard are amped right up. The set-list is amazing the gig itself shit tbh.

On my first listen, up to track 12, its been fucking brilliant so far. I'm shocked how good it sounds, the production is amazing, the songs are in place & apart from Where Are We Now Bowie sounds young, almost as if it could of been released in the late 70s/early 80s

There's an urgency about Bowie on this album; like he has no fear and nothing will hold him back.

I cannot believe how good this album is. Only track I'm not sold on is 'Heat' but it doesn't matter because the other 13 tracks are fantastic.
Album of the year so far for me.

Been reading some reviews which have mostly been spot on. However, Sputnik Music said this:
But The Next Day has its troubles. "Where Are We Now?", despite being an excellent song, sticks out badly surrounded by up-beat alternative rock songs, and may have fit better either standing alongside "Heat" or arriving earlier in the album. The last few tracks stand on shaky ground as well, as between "How Does the Grass Grow" and "Heat" are two tracks that are not nearly as attention-grabbing as their surroundings, and "Love Is Lost" suffers a similar fate to a less significant extent. This is largely a problem of ordering, as these songs are either bookended by album highlights or positioned towards the conclusion, reducing their impact.
I mostly disagree with the above.
I think Where Are We Now works really well on the album; it serves almost as an quiet reflective interlude for what we've just heard, slowing things down a little before launching into the riffs of Valentines Day.
And, How Does The Grass Grow is probably one of my favourites from the album at this point.
Still not sure where I'm at with Heat; I think the album would've been better served being closed by You Feel So Lonely You Could Die

I think the positioning of Where Are We Now? fits really well, but I'm not sold on the album as a full piece (yet - I've only had one and a bit listens). There are a few crackers on there, but some of the arrangements sound a bit cheesy. The two singles have grown on me, so I'm sure the rest of it probably will too.

I reckon it's a grower. I liked it on the first listen or 2 but reckon it's bloody marvellous now.

Is it acceptable to start calling albums that initially sound great and get worse over time shrinkers?

Glad I've seen some mention about NME's cover featuring Bowie, for two reasons. First, I thought that the image was an enthralling and very wise way to sum up the myth. Simple, original and clear, it deserved some praising. But on the other hand, I was quite suspicious about it. He hasn't done much press, with most of the information around the record coming from Tony Visconti. Then he accepts a photoshot from the NME and they make their first original and fresh cover in ten years? It was all a little strange... On Pitchfork they clarify the mystery. The photo was taken by Bowie's front office and then sent to the NME with an irresistible message accompanying it.
