I reckon so. Personally I couldn't care less, I'd agree that Fassbender would fit the bill.

Probably one silly person will overreact to it and then the headlines will say "EVERYONE'S SO RACIST". Then they will find him some Spanish ancestor and will change it to "SPANIARDS ARE RACIST SCUM BUT WE ALREADY KNEW THAT". It will be a shit film and will make a lot of money. The next day nobody will care.

He's white. It's not like you're going to suddenly make him short or working class or give him a ponytail. He's a white posh guy with a side parting. That's him.

It's like making a white Shaft. Shaft's black. That's him.

I don't think it's a bad idea. Being black is a massive part of Shaft's identity, whereas being white isn't part of Bonds'. It's just the things we associate with Bond (educated at boarding school, working for the security services) are things we usually associate with white people. A black Bond wouldnt have worked twenty years ago as no black man could ever have had that back story, but now there's a small amount that could, though admittedly they'd be very much in the minority.

The only stumbling block would be his Scottish ancestry, but then not every Bond is 100% true to the prototype.

Bond is an icon to the white upper-middle classes and by having a black Bond I suspect the lefty supporters are really wanting those right wing areas of society to accept "black" culture. The whole thing is ridiculous because a black Bond doesn't symbolise anything but conforming.

The next Bond should be Brock Lesnar.

The next Shaft should be Danny Brown.

James Bond is a worldwide icon not just an icon to the white middle classes.

Bond will always be culturally 'white', whatever that means, he's not going to be quoting Jay Z lyrics FFS. It wouldn't show anything other than the fact that more and more ethnic minorities are going through these historically white institutions that produced the original Bond. Obviously that's not why you would pick him, but black actors that can do the job should be considered. Needless to say you couldn't really consider other ethnic minorities given the name of the character.

Bond is/was Scottish in the books but I agree with letting a pikey play him is just wrong

That just sounds like an attempt to address and rationalise the fact that blacks are the only ethnic minority to be considered before someone else mentions it.

I think there's a difference between being a watchable worldwide film franchise and being the kind icon he is to rich white British people. The two are linked though. If you search 'black bond' you just get discussions in British broadsheets and things like the Huffington Post. I think being Bond comes across as some kind of prize with the underlying idea that the blacks are second in the race hierarchy which is a pretty disgusting idea.

What happens after the Black bond? Do we give it to a Pole? Or a Muslim? Or a lesbian?

It's just gonna become a tick list. Whose go is it next? You can imagine in 2040 the albino midget transvestites saying "when is it our turn?"

I think it will end up defining to that worldwide audience what being British is by Bond's white upper class character.
