Never got into Pink Floyd.
All the other legendary rock gods that I hated so as a teenager i've been slowly won over by (Bowie, Springstein, The Stones, Neil Young) but Pink Floyd has always escaped me. Some of their earlier stuff is cool if a bit silly but i've never even tried to tackle dark side of the moon, i'd feel dirty even trying.

bowie is a decent exception to the rule, his last album was very good. arsed about dylan or the stones new material. You're not really arsed about Dylan in general are you? I think Dylan has put out some decent stuff over the last 10 or 15 years as has Neil Young.

I listened to the new Floyd this morning & actually quite enjoyed it. It'd work well as a film-score, some nice moody atmospheric pieces. When they get close to anything that resembles a song it falls apart but I've read a lot of shit regarding the record & TBH it isn't that bad.
Stocky, had no idea you'd got the Springsteen bug, I'm so chuffed for you man. My life is so much better thanks to the boss.

I've not liked anything I've heard from Dylan after his prime. It just doesn't interest me tbh.
The beauty with Neil Young is that he's ALWAYS sounded like an old man so now he's 107 years old he sounds pretty much like he did in the 70s.
Stocky has touched upon something with his post. I think its interesting (& quite amusing) to see peoples (especially mine) ideals change with time. Artists which I couldn't stand I now have started to appreciate. Also my attitude towards older artists has changed in a big way. I remember (I think it was) Chrissie posting in the gig thread about TEN YEARS AGO that he had seen Bowie & me pretty much saying why would I want to see an old dinosaur.
I do think in recent years attitudes have somewhat changed towards older artists, not only from the public but from the performers themselves. You've got to remember that bands like the Stones by the late 70s were seen as old biddy's even then, now I think there is more open mindedness towards older artists if they have something to offer.Of course you get those bands like the Stones that are happy to live off past glories and have literally nothing to offer but I think nowadays artists are more aware of trends and how to tread without relying too heavily on past glories and without desperately trying to sound relevant by following trends.
of course most artists do get older & end up useless with nothing to say other than to try and repeat past glorious until they are pretty much worthless. But in just the past three years or so you've had great records from MBV, Bowie, Nick Cave, Eno, Flaming Lips, Neil Young, Primal Scream, Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Tom Waits, Charles Bradley - all of who are into their 50s & above.
Also I must add, listening to that new Pink Floyd, I was shocked how much it sounded like The Jesus Abyss. Gilmour has clearly been snooping around the Yellow Peril archives.

Well, tastes change and specially if you educate them and put prejudices aside, it's nothing new.
And respect to the second part, young bands were the ones that made those old artists irrelevant (glam->prog->punk->post-punk,etc.) but now everything is exhausted and recycled so they'll never be out of trend again. Everything is trendy at the same time but nothing will ever be THAT trendy. It's not a matter of quality but freshness, even the most original things feel old after one week...
