Morning Glory
Australia-only single from WTSMG, the song that gave the album its title, this sounds like a hangover (in a good way). The pounding drums, piercing lead riff, and sinister secondary riff (supposedly borrowed from REM's "The one I love" make up for the lazy "repeat the first verse" lyrics. Often performed acoustically live, with Noel on vocals to poor effect, it's a stone-cold classic. The clumsy Beatles reference and the unavoidable inference that it's about waking up with an embarrassing erection only cost it a point - it's a 9/10 Fun fact for everyone, Morning Glory was the first song I ever learned to play on the guitar. Those Em and Dsus2, two fingered chords, were a dream for the novice. Christmas Day 1999 I proudly played those two chords in the verse over and over to my forlorn looking family having spent about 5 hours trying to learn it. For that reason, it's getting 9/10. BANGER Supersonic rythm guitar was the first thing I played. Morning Glory is a 7.5/10 but oh surprise Mucky Fingers is a 8

Mucky Fingers
Some people were really impressed with this, I never really got it. Noel in shouty mode, lyrics about… something supposedly profound, apparently political, repetitive music climaxing in a harmonica solo. Happy to take notes on what it's all about - "you found your God in a paper bag, you get your history from the Union Jack" - uh, what? 4/10 Well i'm no defender of noel's lyrics but of all his lyrics that seems a curious line to highlight. Finding God in a paper bag could mean having a belief system based of the ephemeral, implying there's no substance to your character if you're prepared to live your life by what you find in garbage. Uncritically following whatever you find. Getting history from the Union Jack - This could either be just a direct reference to our (Britains) colonial and imperial past with all that implies or generalised to being informed by those at the top of a hierarchical structure, without the curiosity or intelligence to investigate further.

I guess that makes sense - I'm just not sure who it's aimed at, or why. My Big Mouth
I recall one Be Here Now review suggesting that DYKWIM was just an intro, and that this is where BHN starts, with big crashing drums smashing through everything, including the squall of feedback. The NME took offence to the "sleeping with the enemy" line, needlessly. We get a Beatles reference (that Noel's already used in Wonderwall), a Roses reference (kind of - "where angles fly, you won't play"), a decent guitar line and some cool swirling vocal effects. The lyrics as printed in the CD booklet differ from what Liam sings ("Who'll put on my shoes" vs. "I'll put on my shoes", changing it from a question to a narration, but it's inconsequential anyway), if we have to glean a meaning from it, it's Noel admitting that he talks a lot of crap and we the fans shouldn't take his words as Holy gospel. Some of it's a bit clunky - "you assumed I knew the way even though the map was given" but Liam sings those lines so well. 6/10 No thoughts from anyone on Married with children? Morning Glory is a 7.5/10 but oh surprise Mucky Fingers is a 8 I'm not doing decimals so they both get an 8 from you. That's more ridiculous than me not loving Columbia and Cigarettes and Alcohol, surely.

Lino, Listen Up is a 10/10 all night for me. Completely masterful in all aspects. Probably my favourite Oasis song, even with the repeated verse and overly long double solo.

wasn't the "god/paperbag/history/union jack" thing a dig at America? I vaguely recall some chatter about them potentially putting mucky fingers out as a standalone single for Glastonbury and noel muttering something to that effect, anyway. (It's only been 14 years, my memory isn't what it used to be.)

The lyrics to Mucky Fingers are great tbf, a strange choice to single out in terms of knocking the words.
My Big Mouth is mindblowing. What a tune. That solo and REALIIISEAAAAAAAAAH. Top of their game, back of the net, game over.

My Generation
Cover of the The Who classic, I can't really think of any band of the 90s/00s who could own the song more than Oasis, or more particularly Liam. Irony free reading, faithfully reproduced musically, it was part of a fan poll to choose which song Oasis would cover - one of the other options was Blur's Country House. Live regular for a while, released as a live b-side to Little By Little. It's fine. 6/10

(Far too obvious. A cooler Oasis would have taken on the actual winner of that poll, Country House, and fucking smashed it.)

My Sister Lover
BHN era b-side, but written and demoed long before then, named for a band that played a crucial role in Oasis getting to be "a thing", it's that lyric that loses this song 1, maybe even two points.
The music's great; I love the broken sounding bass at the start, the bouncy melody with stabs of guitar, the great vocal, and decent lyrics all told - "the truth I have can never be; to photograph what the eye can't see. I fight to live another day; I live to fight now come what may" and "Faith in the lord is something I would never have - 'cos the lord I know don't got no faith in me".
But then it's "you're my lover; I'm your brother". Do we need an ode to incest? I don't think so. 7/10

Massive. Blockbuster solo. Weirdly this tune reminds me of Jack and Meg White both musically and definitely lyrically (brother, sister, lover etc). Didn't they form in 97 as well? Parallel worlds, I'm avin it.

I once used to have a huge crush on my cousin and briefly wondered what 'the family' would say if we got it on. We were very close for years. Thus, in terms of extended family, give a fuck. Haven't seen her for years but have previously thought about tracking her down for a catch up. Eddie could then start a shit thread about our dads (brothers) trying to take us to court or summat. Darron Gibson once went to court, you know.
