Totally in love with the new Laura Marling record. Might be her best yet, if not then it's on par with Once I Was An Eagle. Incredibly high standard of output, 7 records & side project in 12 years. Gutted I'm not seeing her now. For me her best is her last and this is pretty damn close. She seems to just get better and better and the records more and more mature. I still don't think she gets the praise she deserves. Also loving the new Moses Sumney. And again his last (the debut) was a masterpiece for me (my album of that year) and again, this isn't far off. Two contenders for my album of the year.

I'm with you Titch that the last Laura Marling is her best. This new one has grown on me but doesn't reach the highs of that one for me.

This was my first Laura Marling and found it too run of the mill, well crafted aye but felt too generic

Few other things I've been enjoying Happyness: Their best record yet? I've never given them any time before, but this is a delight.

Navaras: Nine Emotions by Yorkston/Thorne/Khan
As in James Yorkston, Jon Thorne and Suhail Yusuf Khan.
It's a scottish folk meets Indian folk meets downbeat jazzy folk.
Sounds like a recipe for disaster, but it's exquisite.
Apparently their third album together.

The harpsichord in 'Jason'. How the fuck does it not feel out of place?

waiting for the right time to get started on new perfume genius. No Shape was probably my favourite album of that year. he's just rarely ever not excellent.

I really liked the last but this is a big step up again. And I think that's saying quite a lot.

i enjoyed it on first listen the other day but i do think i prefer the perfume genius of the fragile, stripped back first 2 albums. i get why people love the more confident and expansive sound of the recent releases but i still yearn for the mr peterson type tracks.

Soapbox hip hop heads. Check out the Jorun PMC album with Jorun Bombay and Phill Most Chill. My hip hop album of the year. Proper throwback stuff. If you liked the Phill Most Chill lp with DJ Formt the other year you'll love this.
Finally broken out of my horrible ladrock phase and seem to be entering a hip hop phase at the minute. I'd kinda neglected this year's hip hop efforts so far so hit me up with any recommendations.

African music has been flavour of the month for a little while now and I guess brought into sharper focus since Tony Allen's death, but this might be the best thing i've heard this year, African or otherwise. Album out on 3rd July.
Great to see Coldcut back producing brilliant music. I'm old enough to have been around since they started out in the late 80s and their Seven Minutes of Madness mix of Paid in Full is still the best 12" ever released in my eyes (fuck New Order). And they are as influential and important as anyone in modern music.
Apparently the album is gonna be chock full of great collaborators.
This blew my mind when I heard for the first time today.
The best. It was so good, that the main sample (female vocal) from the Israeli singer Ofra Haza hit the top 20 on the back of it. Love the comments underneath too- takes me right back. Being a teenager as hip hop took off was fucking great.

I like that Titch, remind me when the albums out. If you're digging afro flavoured stuff check out Ajete - Alo. They're a japanese band they basically do afrobeat, though they use plenty of traditional Japanese instruments so you get the blend of both cultures, really strong record. 180g-ajate.bandcamp.com/album/alo
