Here we gan.. A thoroughly enjoyable listen Kev la. And i'd forgotten what a handsome brute you were. I'm still staggered that there's been no love for SAULT on here though. I know I sound like a broken record. And how anyone can list that dull as dogshit Strokes record higher than either SAULT release this year is beyond my (admittedly limited) comprehension. But, in the spirit of the new year, I will go back to it and try again. I've been listening to the first few albums a lot in the last few months, as my GF (very weirdly for a fan of American indie rock....albeit more in the Sonic Youth, Pavement etc camp...didn't really know much of their music). So, i'll see how it sits in context with the earlier records. Have downloaded the Tiña and Cool Greenhouse albums too. SpoilerZ: 30 - Coriky -Coriky 29 - Thurston Moore - By The Fire 28 - Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today 27 - Caribou - Suddenly 26 - Peggy Sue - Vices 25 - Happyness - Floatr 24 - Jockstrap - Wicked City 23 - pozi - 176 22 - Black Midi - The Black Midi Anthology Vol. 1: Tales of Suspense and Revenge 21 - Nadine Shah - Kitchen Sink 20 - The Cribs - Night Network 19 - Yves Tumor - Heaven to a Tortured Mind 18 - Jerry Paper - Abracadabra 17 - Laura Marling - Song For Our Daughter 16 - Action Bronson - Only For Dolphins 15 - Home Counties - Redevelopment - EP 14 - Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters 13 - Bastien Keb - The Killing of Eugene Peeps 12 - Run the Jewels - RTJ4 11 - JARV IS... - Beyond The Pale 10 - Sophie Hunger - Halluzinationen 9 - Hotel Lux - Barstool Preaching EP 8 - PVA - Toner EP 7 - Marlowe - Marlowe 2 6 - Baxter Dury - The Night Chancers 5 - Moor Jewelry True Opera 4 - The Strokes - The New Abnormal -3 - Horse Lords - The Common Task -3 - Tiña - Positive Mental Health Music -3 - The Cool Greenhouse - The Cool Greenhouse

I think others have said with Sault records, they just felt a little surface level for me. When I have then a listen, first town through there are obviously some nice sounds etc.. but it just didn’t go any further than that for me. I couldn’t find the penetration point with them (oo-er).

I've rinsed them both and perhaps that's key, cos for me one of the strengths is the depth.
Production wise and lyrically.
I could see how perhaps too many styles in one record could put people off and maybe that's why repeated listening rewards, because I think they nail each piece so well. It's a hard trick making something sound brand new and 40+ years old at the same time, but i've never heard anyone do it better without sounding gimmicky.

Whatever Sault record I heard sounded like a half arsed bedroom project. It didn't matter how many genres and ideas they threw about, none of them were explored enough to make them memorable or worthwhile. Lyrically so on the nose that it sounded like they were ticking off a checklist of hot topics without adding any personality or intrigue whatsoever. Wasn't bad by any means, but it just baffles me how this has ended up on all the critics lists.

It's extraordinary that we could have such polar opposite opinions- to my ears It's perfectly formed and I think they've mastered nearly everything they've tried. First time I heard 5 it stopped me in my tracks and on this year's two releases I was staggered at how right they got it in such a short space of time.
Lyrically, they're tackling subjects that need clarity. No point talking around racism- the straighter you make it, the harder it hits. Public Enemy's lyrics were always on the nose too.
But hey ho. This would be the most boring thread ever if we all loved the same records.

Public Enemy's lyrics were always on the nose too. Difference being, when Chuck D speaks, everybody takes notice. It's all cool Titch, I'm glad you enjoy it. Every year hits me with records that are universally praised that I just can't understand why. I guess Sault was mine for this year.

So (if I got it right...) for the first time in Soapbox' history we have a draw!!!
This year we got with 14 the higher number of lists since I've been counting them.
Some bit of trivia: all 3 who voted for Kelly Lee Owens placed her at the 9th position.

Kev- the Sophie Hunger album is fantastic.
Loved the Alpha Venom track from earlier in the year but didn't know she'd released an album.
Would've featured high in my list.
