Alright, motherfuckers - let's crack this on!! For this first elimination round we get two facets of the British swinging 60s: The Small Faces - Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968) vs Cream - Disraeli Gears (1969) Both defining bands of the British Invasion, with Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake the Small Faces took their mod pop and made it coarser and grittier, while Cream took their blues rock and infused it with mind-melting American psychedelia. Both records are meant to be played as LOUD as fucking possible, through speakers the size of garden sheds, possibly on a warm and sunny day.
Take your pick and state your preference guys. The poll ends in just 5 days.

Loooong time since i've listened to either. Went through a period of listening to Odgen's a lot, so deffo need to give Disraeli Gears more time.

I like them both. Listening to Disraeli Gears at the moment and it's huge, the way the guitar and the drums intermingle is absolutely fantastic. I don't like blues-rock much, but this is irresistibly acid and whirly. Also been listening to Ogdens' Nut quite a bit lately, but I didn't remember the sound quality was so bad. Maybe it's just the version on Tidal. I have the cd back home, which I bought, like, 20 years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember how it sounds. Maybe time to invest in a decent sounding copy. I still haven't voted. I'm torn

Not sure I'll vote, I've always felt Ogdens is a bit overrated (or simply too British? anyway prefer the previous one for sure) and have never heard Diasraeli.

I'm torn I've just listended to the 50th Anniversary version of Ogden's on Tidal and the Stereo version sounds so much better than the mono. Which I often find is the other way round.

Not sure I'll vote, I've always felt Ogdens is a bit overrated (or simply too British? anyway prefer the previous one for sure) and have never heard Diasraeli. I (think) know what you mean about Ogden's sounding too British. The whimsical pseudo-slang used by the narrator can grate a bit. I like some of the songs A LOT better than the others. There's a couple of more whimsical (that word again) songs that sound like they belong in a stage musical that just get on my tits. This could of course be me just missing the point, but the album can still sound weird, wonderful and psychedelic without just sounding silly too. I always felt the opening track promised more of the direction I wanted rather than the likes of (the first half of) Rene, HappyDaysToyTown Lazy or Happiness Stan or those song opening narratives in the second half of the record. Incidentally, songs which go on to be great most of the time. Still need to give Disraeli Gears another listen.

I must admit, Odgens was like a top 10 record for me for many years. Though I bought it on wax during lockdown and played it for the first time in ages & it didn't land as well as I remembered. It's still infinitely better than Cream mind you. That's just FUCKING blues-rock tarted up with a bit of psych. You can find 100s of records that sound like that, yet only one like Odgens.

I've had a couple of fresh listens through of Disraeli Gears and while there's still blues rockier bits, they're not really overt until 2 of the last 3 tracks (Outside Woman Blues and Take it Back). Otherwise for me, from tracks 1 to 8 it's bloody great!
I could totally live without the last track Mother's Lament, what was it with British bands and adding daft shit to otherwise great records in the 60s? Don't answer that. The hallucinogens were much stronger back then.
And, can anyone else hear the better bits of The Coral's early career in Dance The Night Away?
Anyway, neither album is anywhere near perfect for me. Love bits of both and would be happy never hearing other bits of both, ever again.
It probably comes down to mood for me, and today is a much more Cream mood than Small Faces, so Disraeli Gears pips it.

This is the kind of active, constructive talk I wanted to see. I know I wished you all died yesterday, but I'm kind of glad some of you made it alive through the night. Good job! I can't suffer most blues-rock too, but Disraeli Gears is very different, it does have a big personality of its own, it's not just 12-bar-shite. I'm still undecided, Ogdens' Nut sometimes sounds like a huge mess (albeit a beautiful one), and I think that's its strength. Disraeli Gears is very polished and accomplished, while on Ogdens' Nut the Small Faces were really pushing the boundaries, and I'm not sure they completely knew what they were doing. I will probably vote last-minute.

I'm not voting, but I have to say I always thought I liked the idea of cream more than I actually like their music, with a few exceptions (white room, badge etc). It's mostly tedious sludge.
Oh, and clapton can get fucked.

Cream: a band so dismal the lead guitarist's son threw himself out of a window.
