I refuse to have tuckerman slagging off my threads so I am BACK WITH A BANG. It is time to rate 1993 lads! 1992 finished on an average of 3.5 meaning our current league table looks like this... 1990 - 3.75 1992 - 3.5 1991 - 3 Now for me, 1993 is a bit of a shitty year. It just doesn't have much to it I reckon. When I think back to most other years in the 90s there were big cultural events I associate with it (albeit mostly football or wrestling as these two things were my world at the time). No big international tournament in 93 though, Spurs were shit and wrestling had a fucking lame year and this was where it all started to go wrong for WWF for a few years prior to the Attitude era. Boxing saved the day sports wise with Eubank v Benn 2 and Lewis v Bruno. Film wise it fares a bit better with Mike Leigh's Naked being my favourite film of the year. Obviously I wasn't watching that at the time though, instead I was fairly dinosaur obsessed and loving Jurassic Park. Mrs Doubtfire was another JP favourite of the time and still stands up to this day. In the world of music, 36 Chambers is probably my album of the year closely followed by Come on Feel The Lemonheads and Souvlaki by Slowdive. There were also other classics like In Utero, Midnight Marauders, Suede, Storm in Heaven, Wild Wood and 93 til infinity. Overall though it has to be my lowest scoring year so far with a 3. Nondescript year with much much better to come.

1993 was the first year I really started getting into football. Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday were the teams I liked simply because in both the FA Cup & League Cup final it was Arsenal vs Sheffield Wednesday. I remember some sort of inner conflict over which team I liked best. I remember those games being very exciting and dramatic. Then later in the year, I watched Man Utd & Galatasaray in the Champions League. The the 3-3 in the first leg was amazing to me and of course in the return leg I wanted the the English team to win. I remember we had to go visit my grandad in the nursing home he was in the night it was on, so I watched it sat on the floor in front of the little TV in his little room. The room was thick with smoke from my Grandad chain smoking roll-ups, while my Mum and Auntie went at the ciggies. Still amazed how I don't have lung cancer with the amount of second hand smoking I was subjected to. Anyway, Utd went out and I remember being absolutely devastated, crying my eyes out. I remember my Mum and Auntie telling me it was just a game, and to stop being silly. I think it was a very mild form of them trying to comfort and console me. And my Grandad was laughing at me calling me a "little puff" It was from that point I started supporting/being a fan of Man Utd. The other big thing in my life was video games. I had a Mega Drive in 1993 and remember some pretty BIG games - most notably Mortal Kombat & FIFA International Soccer. I remember Mortal Kombat being really hard to get hold of. My Uncle rented it for my and my cousin one weekend and it was incredible. I'd never seen such realistic violence in a game. I don't think we actually had proper fights on it, we'd just take turns beating the shit out of each other with all the characters and figuring stuff out. My cousin eventually got it for his birthday, and not long after my parents agreed to get me it. Then there was FIFA. My exposure to footy games at this point was World Cup Italia 90 so when I got FIFA it was just mind-blowing. My favourite thing to do was get booked and then spend as long as I could running away from the referee. There was also a Ryan Giggs football game which I remember trying to teach my Dad how to play but not sure if that was 93 or 94 maybe. Other games that deserve a mention are Aladin and Cool Spot. Movies wise, of course it's all about Jurassic Park. Remember my Uncle getting a pirated copy and being absolutely blow away by it. I also remember seeing Mrs Doubtfire and the Super Mario Bros movie quite vividly. Anyway, those are my actual memories. I don't remember what music I might've been listening to in 1993 tbh. Whatever my mum was playing in the car at the time I suppose. Some albums I've grown to like / love from 1993: GBV - Vampire On Titus The Flaming Lips - Transmissions from the Satellite Heart Suede - Animal Nitrate Dinosaur Jr - Where You Been EDIT: How could I forget the wrestling? I was big into WWF by 1993. I particularly remember Wrestlemania IX and all the shenanigans in the main event, with Hogan crapping all over everything. There was also the spectacle that was The Undertaker vs Giant Gonzalez.

1993 contains 3 all time favourites!
IN UTERO / COME ON FEEL THE LEMONHEADS / ENTER THE 36 CHAMBERS
closely behind we have Billy Childish's album with the singing Loins, Souvlaki (which I only finally decided was great around this Christmas time!), Souls of Mischief debut & Weller's Wild Wood.
Then throw in debut's from Bjork, Frank Black, you've got great hip hop from Del the Funky Homosapien, Tha Alkaholiks, A Tribe Called Quest + Jazzmatazz Volume 1. Suede, Blur, Flaming Lips, Godstar & Thee Headcoats all putting out strong records.
Film wise
NAKED #1 COOL RUNNINGS / THE FILM ABOUT THE JEWS / TRUE ROMANCE / WAYNES WORLD 2 (almost as good as the 1st) Then strong films such as A BRONX TALE, CARLITO'S WAY, THE FUGITIVE, GROUNDHOG DAY, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, LAST ACTION HERO & THE ASSASIN.

I was definitely huge into Nirvana at this point. I believe I'd got Incecticide for Christmas end of 92 (could be wrong) & bought In Utero around the time it came out, probably not the day or week it came out mind you. Was still listening to GNR & 80s Alice Cooper, though something else I either bought or was gifted that year was Aerosmith's GET A GRIP album that had the mega hits LIVING ON THE EDGE, SHUT UP AND DANCE + big ballads CRAZY & CRYIN'. The video for Crazy with Liv Tyler & Alicia Silverstone, oh baby! Film wise, probably was still watching Terminator 2 on a weekly basis. Went to Blackpool for a holiday which I've fond memories of. Jurassic Park had come out a few weeks early, my parents said it was sold out everywhere (looking back, I reckon they lied), anyway we saw in at like 9am in Blackpool in an almost empty cinema, was great of course. Not sure if they came out on VHS this year or the next but I remember me & my parents all loving The Fugitive & The Assassin (Bridget Fonda was smoking). Cool Runnings became a film I've seen countless times & can quote pretty much the entire film. Was starting to watch a lot more football & spend most my time outside playing it. Cantona & Le Tissier were my idols, I was always more into players than actual teams. Though I was going to watch Erith & Belvedere with my uncle & cousin a lot. This season they had Sean Devine up front for a few months, he was absolutely banging them in. He ended up being top goalscorer for Barnet 3 seasons in a row & would have signed for West Ham had he not got a horrible injury the week of his trial. Weirdly wikipedia doesn't list his time at Erith, I wonder how long it was, he was there at least a few months because he was scoring every game & they looked shit hot, then he left & they ended up nearly going down Here I am as mascot for a game putting a penalty past their goalkeeper. not sure if this was actually 93 or not, maybe before. Anyway I remember being in the changing room and seeing all their adult willy's whilst they got ready for the match and not knowing where to look, then at half time a fight nearly broke out between two players Wrestling I was definitely starting to lose interest in as I got more into football. Wasn't watching too much and remember thinking Wrestlemania was a bit lame & that was kinda me done with it for a good few years. I'd reached the age where wresting was GAY. Snooker, once again sat there cheering on Jimmy White only for Hendry to spoil the party again. Though I remember actually wanting James Wattana to beat White in the semi, he became my favourite player for a hot minute. Boxing was the big Eubank Vs Benn 2. I had been over the fields near us playing cricket & some gypsy's great big Alsatian had bit my leg pretty bad. I remember the owner beating the dog half to death with one of our cricket stumps which upset me more than the mauling I'd got. Anyway, my dad drove me up A&E near us (same hospital ABS was born btw!) & we were there hours & was watching the time tick down thinking we was going to miss the big fight. I finally got seen to & we got home just in time. Computer games: I got a Mega drive for my birthday. A bonus was I'd been visiting my my dad's friend RUPERT (see from previous years) & had fell off my bike really badly riding down shooters hill. I cut my knees and elbows up badly and the entirety of my back was completely ripped off the skin. My dad drove me home & my mum went and got a nurse who lived over the road and she said put salt water in the bath tub... to which I screamed the house down ANYWAY, I was let off school for a week which was around when I got my mega drive so I was able to play Golden Axe, Sonic, Spiderman & Road Rash non stop for a week, it was fucking heaven. Mega Drive is the system I probably have fondest memories of. Just felt more adult and dangerous than the Nintendo. The scab that formed on my back was so big it had all green bits in and looked like a giant pizza. Something I remember of pre internet days was computer game magazines. The adverts in the back, they had these listings where if you was stuck you could write off to somebody that had left an address & for like a bunch of stamps they'd reply & tell you how to advance in the game. I wrote off as I was shit at the Spiderman game and this cunt replied with like a fully written in pen walk through of the entire game I still couldn't get past the fucking bit I was stuck on & I'd imagine that had taken the sad little bastard fucking hours to write out.
