Jacksonville City Nights is the album I play most by him nowadays. The first three tracks are mindblowing, and if the Cardinals version of Dear John was the 4th track, instead of the Norah Jones one, it'd probably be my favourite album by him. ANDY, the ex-Scottish forumer, agreed with me on this. The Norah Jones version is still good and grows on me each time, but the Cardinals one is just mega and the version I loved/heard first. It feels a bit like Giants, a forgotten 4-star album and could have been a 5-star with Let's All Make Believe, that's basically Jacksonville City Nights with the other version of Dear John. Love the Elvis cover as the last track too. This album brings back VIVID memories of a time when I went to Newcastle to meet a girl I met online. Stumbled across her profile on Plenty Of Fish and from her picture she looked pretty fit. So, I messaged her. She replied but didn't seem super keen. Still, I kept at it and we struck it off. She added me on MSN and we talked loads for about a month. She used to go on her webcam and get her tits out and text me topless pictures. I realized she wasn't quite as fit as in that first picture but decided I would definitely still smash given the chance. Eventually, she asked if I wanted to meet up. I was pretty nervous about the idea because I'd never met anyone on the internet and met up before but obviously I said yes. I went into town and bought some new clobber and purchased a fucking WHITE coat. It was a pretty cool coat but with hindsight it is not the type of thing I should've been trying to pull off. Anyway, the day came and I spent the morning drinking cans and also having a few lines to get me feeling gooood. And for some reason, I was listening to Jacksonville City Nights. No idea why but was really feeling it. Something like Be Here Now probably would've been more appropriate, but there you go. Took a couple of cans on the train and spent the whole journey there listening to it on my iPod, feeling like a real cool motherfucker in my white coat. Got to the rendezvous point and waited about 10 minutes for her to arrive, and when she did, she looked far rougher than she had in pictures and on webcam, and she spoke like an absolute mong. I should have made an excuse and made a getaway but I'm a nice guy, so we went for a few drinks, then went to Frankie & Benny's for lunch. She was half cut and seemed like her engine was getting revved a bit. I'd had about 5 pints at this point and decided to throw caution to the wind, asking her if we should go to hers once we'd finished up. She agreed and it seemed like things were very much ON. Got to Newcastle bus station and while waiting for the bus to Cramlington, she bumps into a mate. She's also not that great on the eyes, but whatever. She introduces us, and tells her mate we're going back to hers, and then asks her mate if she wants to come as well. While we're stood, the girl I went to meet initially plants the lips on me. When she's done, her mate the does the same. By now, I am 100% convinced that a threesome is going to happen. Then it all breaks down a bit. While we're stood, some lad approaches, pissed out of his head. He starts shouting at original girl, calling her a slag/slut, etc. Then he starts getting in my face a bit asking who I am, how do I know her. She pipes up that I'm just a friend. He shoves original girl a bit, nothing too aggressive or violent. So then original girls pal shoves him. Then they're all shouting and arguing. He walks away and they start following him, still all arguing. So I did the most logical thing and made my escape. It was too much fucking drama for me to handle. Listened to Jacksonville City Nights all the way home on the train thinking what a mad day it had been - by this point it can't be much later than 2pm. The girl I went to meet is texting me, asking where I've gone, telling me to come back. I ignored her. Got off the train and walked to my sisters, still listening to Jacksonville City Nights. Spent the rest of the afternoon and night getting stoned in my sisters. At about 11pm, my phone rings and it's her. So answer and she is absolutely obliterated, drunk AF. She's crying, telling me she loves me, begging me to go back and see her the next day. By this point, I'm as stoned as a bastard and I just cannot handle, so I just say sorry and hang up. Blocked her number, blocked and deleted her on MSN, and never spoke to her again. Listening to the album, it all came flooding back so thought I'd be so kind as to share.

Brilliant story and glad you remember the album so fondly with it, but sounded as though she was still game and the threesome was still a possibility! Haha.
The only time/regret I've had like that was when I met a girl playing badminton in a group thing, then we swapped numbers and decided to just arrange a game ourselves. We did play, then the next week arranged another game, but then agreed to cancel and meet in her bed basically. But I had a really bad thing for another girl at the time so felt I was two-timing, maybe not her, but myself, so backed out, fecking stupid. She was a scouser and a big Liverpool fan and never stopped talking about 'Stevie G' which I'm not gonna lie, probably stopped it going further than a fling, so then I backed out completely 🤣
Six months later I text saying I was stupid to back out and asked her 'has the ship sailed?' and she replies 'no, my vagina is still in the harbour'. Then I think she mentioned Stevie Gerrard again, I didn't reply, then tried ringing her a month later and was blocked as I backed off twice. Thinking back it was stupid turning down a fecking fling of any sort. What else did I do? Posted on the soapbox and watched shit TV probably. Great!

Tux - Doing gear and mixing it up in the sewers of Newcastle. Sully - Playing Badminton.
Interesting contrast.

🤣
The ironic thing was the badminton group was called 'no-strings badminton' meaning no commitment to go every week, just turn up when you want and pay a few quid. Then from it, I literally turned down a no-strings shag.
A story for the grandkids for sure.

She's probably shuttled cock a least a dozen times by now anyway, crying 'Steeeeeevie G' as she orgasms. I tried to find her on tinternet afterwards but could only remember her first name Helene.

I wish I had a great Jacksonville City Nights story all I remember in 2005 my longtime girlfriend had broken it off with me and I was emo as fuck. I made it through the summer and this album came out in September and put me back down a dark hole.
I DO LOVE IT THOUGH
Hard Way To Fall is my fav off of it.

I don't why I'm posting this in here, but I swear I just MET PJ Harvey in Tescos in Redruth, Cornwall!
Only she blagged me and said she wasn't her! And I fell for it!! But I didn't pester her as she was wearing huge glasses and a hat and clearly trying to hide. She not 'nooooo' and I said 'you know who she is though?' and she said 'a singer' and for a split second thought about trying to chat her up, thinking it wasn't her and just a lookalike fan, until a man turned the corner who she was with 🤣 (she's not married though right?)
Basically I knew it was her, then she pretended she wasn't, then I thought I was mistaken, until I ended the exchange with 'she's amazing' and she replied 'thank you'. Hahaha!
She's still really pretty for her age. If she'd wanted to talk then god knows what I'd have asked!
What a moment either way. At least she knows a bloke buying cheaper cider and a baguette thinks she's amazing.

She'll be flicking her bean til it swells up like a Chyna mini dick tonight The fact I possibly had a chance to chat up Polly Harvey and failed is worthy of the theme of the thread omg 🤣 She's not married but could well have been her fella although never hear she's dating anyone. She was wearing all black and I saw the back of her head first and was drawn to her as she did look a bit like a celebrity goth under cover. I gave her a look I was gonna try to chat her up as well. When she said 'thank you' and we walked apart I heard her sigh but thought she felt a bit guilty about tricking me but maybe she thought she was in with a fan 20 years younger than her?! This is tragic. I need to send an email somewhere, somehow. I look like Nick Cave in the head nowadays too! Does John Parish intercept her email?

Tucker, I’m not being funny, but did you really expect to be able to do the business on a first date after spending the morning tanning cans and hitting lines?
Fair play if so.

I have been playing Love Is Hell a lot lately and I forgot how much I enjoyed it. I did forget though that it originally came out as two ep's.
'Love Is Hell was initially rejected by Adams's label Lost Highway, who had deemed its sound as "too alternative rock"[1] and considered it not to be commercially viable.[2][3] As a result, Adams recorded Rock n Roll in two weeks,[4][5] which was released as his official fourth studio album on November 4, 2003, and the content of Love Is Hell was released as two EPs: Love Is Hell pt. 1 on the same day as Rock n Roll and Love Is Hell pt. 2 on December 9. The EPs were eventually combined into one album, which was released on May 4, 2004 as Adams's fifth studio album. The Oasis cover "Wonderwall" was released as a single from Love Is Hell in the UK on June 28, 2004. The album was released in Japan on June 27, 2007 with a bonus disc of tracks recorded during the same sessions as the album.[6]
The track "The Shadowlands" was written backstage in Belfast on November 26, 2002, with Adams performing it as his opening song. The track "Anybody Wanna Take Me Home" was included on both Rock n Roll and Love Is Hell, although in different versions. As it appears on Rock n Roll, the song is 4:46 long and features a fade out and fade-back-in effect, whereas the Love Is Hell version is longer, clocking at 5:31, and does not include the fade effects.
Adams's version of "Wonderwall" was made available as downloadable content for the 2008 video game Guitar Hero World Tour as part of an acoustic pack in January 2009'
Great album tbh.

I've been re-warming up to Rock'n'Roll as well. I think he hates it but it got a few good tunes on it.
Still can't get over the trio of Love Is Hell - Cold Roses - Jacksonville City Nights.
I don't listen to 29 near enough - I might throw it on now. Not one song is sticking with me.

let him go Steve! Lenderman is here!
Though I am due a revisit of Love is Hell. Annoying that the EP versions aren't on Spotify. I can't see Halloween on there.
