www.nme.com/news/the-fall/53488fta The Fall's Mark E Smith has claimed that he threw a bottle at Mumford and Sons at a recent festival. The singer said that he took matters into his own hands because he did not like the sound of Marcus Mumford and the gang warming up their vocals. "We were playing a festival in Dublin the other week," he told Australian magazine Brag. "There was this other group warming up in the next sort of chalet, and they were terrible." He added: "I said, 'Shut them cunts up,' and they were still warming up, so I threw a bottle at them. The band said, 'That's the Sons Of Mumford [sic] or something, they're Number Five in charts!'. I just thought they were a load of retarded Irish folk singers." The Fall and Mumford and Sons were both on the bill for the Electric Picnic festival, which took place near Dublin last month.

Mumford and Sons any good? Seems to be a lot of cunts around here who like them so I guess I shouldn't even be asking if they are worth checking out.

Fucking hell, he mentioned recently that he'd been ill, there was another picture of him from a couple of months back where he looked terrible.
This is shocking to see, but not surprising at all. I saw them 18 months ago and, although he's clearly always been an alcoholic, he was the worst I've ever seen him. The band went on very late and him and his missus didn't show up for another 10 minutes, she had clearly dragged him out of a boozer and straight onto the stage and it was a shit gig, he was a complete wreck.
He'll be gone soon, surely.

I'd imagine he's completely skint too which is why he has to continuously tour.

I saw the Fall last year and they were decent TBH. But MES looked in far better health.
I wouldn't be so sure about him needing the money. He's lived in the same house for 30 years and has royalties from some surprisingly successful songs. The trial arguing over who cowrote Touch Sensitive revealed just how much some Fall songs make
Of course, it may be his Greek bird has chucked him and he needs to pay for a divorce.

Do you think he really enjoys performing these days though? I can't imagine him doing it for the love of performance. Maybe he feels an obligation to the band, that lineup has lasted some time now.

I think the routine of touring, like a lot of ageing musos, is what keeps him going. It's all he knows. What does he do if he stops? Gets plastered in the same Manc bars until he croaks it.
