more info
When Britpop stalwarts Supergrass had “a 17-year itch” and split up last year, the trendily hirsute foursome left a void where their hotly anticipated seventh studio album, Release The Drones, should have been. Having been tipped as their most creative album to-date, promising instrument swapping and minimalist experimentation, it proved to be their downfall. In April the band publicly announced their “musical differences” and went their separate ways.
Since then, instead of taking a well-earned break, former front man Gaz Coombes, 36, has been busier than ever. Far from feeling creatively spent post break-up, as might be expected, he said he experienced “a surge of energy and songs”. Having transformed the basement of his Oxfordshire home into a recording studio, he’s been working with producer Sam Williams to put his debut solo album together. The yet-to-be-named record is almost finished, he says, and is due to be released in the autumn.
Any regrets about not completing the last album with band mates (and brother) Rob Coombes, Danny Goffey and Mick Quinn? “Yeah, of course. I don’t like not finishing something I’ve started. I think that individually everyone in Supergrass is capable of making incredible records. But something wasn’t right during the period [we were recording Release The Drones]. I felt that there was no point in forcing something mediocre. That it would be better just to stop. We were such a tight family for 18 years, but, to me, it just wasn’t really firing. I wanted to wander about and fall down some rabbit holes, to see what I can do.”
Coombes makes it obvious, although he doesn’t say it, that he finds it freeing working independently. “The whole project, for me, is about being spontaneous. I just really want to make an expressive, exciting record; to play with sounds and find new ways of recording things. Not holding back at all, really...I mean, I fucking love playing the drums. I also get a buzz from getting the beats up, twisting the melody and deconstructing the tune. It’s quite free. I play pretty much all the instruments on the new album.”
Having retreated to the quiet of Oxfordshire following Supergrass’ farewell tour last summer, Coombes has popped up again on UK screens of late, a little surprisingly, in a Toyota Yaris advert. In his debut acting foray he is accosted by an ardent fan who gets his girlfriend to photograph them together on a mobile phone. It is a bit of a departure for the characteristically private musician and has garnered a mixed reaction online. “I had some reservations about doing it to be honest,” he admits. “That sort of thing is not immediately my cup of tea. But when I got the script through it sounded quite funny.”
He sums up the new album in three words: psychedelic, energetic, cinematic. As the face of Supergrass (with signature oversized sideburns), Coombes has always been a bit edgy. The band’s breakthrough album, I Should Coco, harnessed the irreverent mid-Nineties zeitgeist, but did so with a raw and comically endearing quality (notably 'Caught By The Fuzz' and 'Mansize Rooster') that highlighted their extreme youth. Their sound had progressed to more mainstream indie by their third album, of which chart #1 Pumping on Your Stereo is the most recognisable. But as the band grew up so did their sound, and the rather svelte Diamond Hoo Har reached #19 in the UK album charts in 2008.
While Supergrass never quite reached the renown of Britpop counterparts Blur and Oasis, this was probably because they shied away from fame than because they were any less interesting. When speaking to Coombes you are struck forcibly by just how normal he has remained. Indicative of this is the fact that he and Rob and Goffey all still live in the Oxfordshire village of Wheatley where they grew up. “I still see the boys [Supergrass band mates] a lot,” Coombes says. “Even though there were lots of arguments and disagreements around the split, we still ended up remaining pretty close.”
So, any chance of a Supergrass reprisal? “I just can’t really entertain the idea of that right now. It’s just not in my mind at all. I suppose one day it’s possible. We might call each other up and be like ‘Man I miss you guys, let’s do a mad album.’ But I can’t imagine we’d be up for defecating on the name of Supergrass by doing a huge tour and raking in cash.”

Yes, it's mentioned in the post above which you didn't read Why is it a shame? Supergrass have split, he might need a few quid to fund his LP. Kind of strange how anyone would think I'd be more likely to buy a car after seeing the bloke from Supergrass in an advert but still, he's in it for the money.

Aye, that's what's a shame. Supergrass break up and he's had to do an advert already. But ah well. Should really have read the post first anyway. Fingers crossed he is actually releasing albums under the name SuperGaz. If this is infact stated in the aforementioned post that I didn't read then I give up.
