Exactly as you thought, SMMRP stands for "Shenandoah's Mid-Monthly Record Pick", # stands for "number" and the number that follows stands for said number. I dunno if it's me or what, but I kinda miss the old days when the music section was one of the best and most frenetic sections of our boards. So that's my humble attempt at refilling its vein with some fresh blood. I'm going to a record every 15 days. It's going to be obscure, overlooked or (as in this case) records that simply don't get the attention they deserve. It's not going to be extreme weird stuff but song-oriented music that everybody can enjoy. Maybe some of these records will be already known to most of you but eh, what do I know.
Jonathan Richman - I, Jonathan (1992)
Well, what can I say about this record? This is easily one of my favourite records of all time. I don't know that many record that I can describe as "happy" or "fun", but this is one that comes very close to that definition. It's a very simple album - voice, guitar, drums and some backing vocals here and there - and the songwriting is not particularly stellar, as most of the songs have that very simple, repetitive 50s rock'n'roll style, sometimes crossed with latin tempos. But the beauty of these songs is in Jonathan Richman's soul, and the way he can be humorous, naive and passionate all at once. Lyrics are amazing, and even the most ingenous ones denote both a purity and a cleverness that are rare to find in most of his peers. Well, that's it, I guess I don't have that much to say about it, but this is a record that makes the world a better place and the joy it gives me is immense. Highlights of the album include "Velvet Underground" which is an ode to the band and features a mini-cover of Sister Ray (!) within it, "I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar" - pure joy - and "That Summer Feeling" which is the perfect summer sunset song, if it makes sense.
