Being a Canadian this one hits home really hard. I seen the video (well I had to turn it off pretty quickly) and it's just terrifying. I cannot imagine how the players/coaches and the supporters are feeling after watching this.
Growing up you wear what is called a neck brace/protector for this very reason. I had so many close calls growing up and this I am sure saved me more than once. I have no idea why once a player comes out of the "amateur" ranks they can ditch it. Not one single player in the NHL wears this.
I believe in the 1980s a goalie in the NHL got a skate blade to the neck but he survived thankfully.
We have pro team here in my city and I took my son to his first game last weekend and he had such a fun time. I cannot imagine the parents who brought their kids last night to this and now having to try to explain to those kids what they saw. EUGH.

Hopefully people remember him for grinding it out in the minor leagues to eventually living his dream of getting to the NHL and scoring his first NHL goal.

He def didn't do it on purpose. I see that is making the rounds but for anybody who has played the game knows that this was an accident.
I noticed now that players are starting to wear neckguards. Hopefully the uptick continues on this.
