No, slightly better than last years but still relying on farce For the comedy, the poignant bits are still good though

yeah it was alright and better than last years. was still too reliant on slapstick and toilet humour than the subtlety that used to make it so great though.

I wasn't even planning on watching it the last two were so amazingly bad, but it was on and I was trapped in a roast vegetable malaise so let it be, and by it's recent yearly Christmas special/parody of itself standards, this was actually surprisingly decent. Obviously the show it was is dead and gone and really it's a little bit sad that the beeb are still clinging to it as the jewel in their Christmas crown (and that I'm happy with it merely not being totally shit), but I did properly laugh a few times (like Joe telling Anthony's missus that his last one was better looking ) while ridiculously lazy clunk was pleasingly thin on the ground. Basically I didn't get angry and turn over to watch Elf after 10 minutes like last year, though in fairness if I'd done that this time I'd have been able to catch the start of Die Hard so swings and roundabouts.

No way Murphs, the first two series were pretty much perfect for me.
Didn't even bother with the new one in the end, watched a shit film instead.

I think one problem is the working classes have moved on a great deal over the last 10-15 years. The ones who dwell in their stupidity are generally blighted with a whole host of other negatives. Perhaps if Jim battered Barbara it would ring a bit more true. Your average working class family are now a great deal more aspirational than The Royles and not just in having a big fuck off tv. I would say the fact the first two series were so real gave it an edge.
I did like the episode though.
7/10

Didn't watch it, always too fucked to watch stuff at that time on christmas day. The most recent episode i've seen is The Queen Of Sheeba which i fucking love, and it sounds like its best keeping it that way.
