"throughout his early years he was essentially used as a utility player, spending time as a centre-half, right and left full-back and defensive midfield "
"In 1999–2000 he played mainly as a right-back,"
COnsiderably more than "one or two games". Even "one or two" is a backtrack from your original claim.
"During this period, Carragher's place in the team was also threatened by signings of Steve Finnan and John Arne Riise."
"He was selected for the England squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and was not in the original starting eleven, but came into the team after Gary Neville suffered an injury."

still takes nothing away from the fact that Everton got raped several times by Portuguese teams (one of which beat Everton 5-0 and then 2-0 before losing 4-1 to Liverpool.)

looks as if villa is gonna be robbie keanes destination after all. really hope we get in a striker who will scare defences, fabiano would be ideal. looks like the fee is messing that one up though. i would be insanely jealous if u signed him. rate him highly tbh. think he'd suit the premier league really well. ;D

Gyan impressed me at the World Cup in a few games, looked strong, quick and skillful, but that's all i've seen of him tbh

Didn't Carragher quit England because they could only fit in him in the team at RB? He definitely played there for years at national level.

no he quit because he was pissed off at the likes of Wes Brown getting picked ahead of him all the time for centre half so he decided that he was being overlooked unfairly and give it up. He played there a few times but like i said he was only ever there as cover and when first choice players were missing, he only became a regular under Houllier who preferred him at left back and in the last 10 years or so he's probably played right back about 10-15 times.
But i moved on from that anyway and proved my point in a better way with Mascherano who has never played right back before but filled in there a few times last season - without making the team a reserve team.

Whether Carragher played right back back twice or 20 times doesn't really have something to do with the fact that the point bobothy is making is completely valid

I`m not doing a Byram here, but that 4-1 although a fair and explicit result, can be explained as one team really wanted to win their league, and other team playing everything on that game. That game, after winning 2-1 at home, was the low moment of our season. I`m sure we would destroy Pathetico Madrid. It was stupid not playing 2 or 3 players and all the talks that we wanted to win the league first. Byram, the only thing "close" on that Benfica 5-0 Everton result, was our the 6th goal.

Our midfield was lacking Pienaar, Arteta, Neville and Osman, we had Fellaini recovering from a virus. So many midfielders out meant we couldn't play our usual formation and had to put Jo in the team, weakening it further. YEs we had Cahill and Howard but far, far from our first xi. It's inarguable.

If gosling playing at right back was the only adjustment we had to make then you'd have a point. I've proved fairly conclusively that it wasn't just that though.

The point is that whether Pienaar was lacking, Fellaini was suffering from a virus doesn't matter. Even if he recovered from fucking AIDS, a reserve team is a team full of players who (ALMOST) NEVER played a match for the first team or at least didn't play first team games for a long period of time (and not because they were injured). It was a weakened Everton team, like bobothy said
