So all my hipster friends hate him. I have no idea how he's seen in the UK. I think he's a fucking absolute genius Specifically in this case, he might as well be the modern day fucking Elvis

Shouldn't hipsters like Beck?
Sea Change is an absolutely amazing album. I can't listen to it terribly often because it sends me into an introspective spiral, but I still love it to bits.

Anyone ever bothered with his various covers albums?
I've had them since release, yet never have the urge to stick em on. It's like The Flaming Lips doing a cover album of Dark Side Of The Moon, something about it just turns me off. Unless it's really different and inventive, what is the point?
Unless i'm wrong and they're actually great, then i'll eat my nose

Unless i'm wrong and they're actually great, then i'll eat my nose His Record Club project was a very interesting idea. Getting some friends together to re-record an album in a week or day (can't remember) is a fresh thing and even more in his inventive hands. I downloaded all of them but never listened though

Give us a ranking of his studio albums Franklin. Hmmmmm..... i think i'd have to go with The Best Of Beck. Er no, i dunno really, but Odelay and Sea Change would deffo be the top two. Mutations maybe third. I like them all, though really Yeah i sorta like the recording an album in a day idea Barny, but was just wondering if anyone had actually bothered listening to any of em. I don't think i've ever heard an opinion on them, anywhere

I used to like him a lot in the 90s/early 2000s. Odelay was one of the great original records when it came out, and he had some excellent material aswell here and there on the other records (Mutations, Mellow Gold etc).
I liked Sea Change when it came out because it is very personal etc, but I always found it a bit overrated. I mean, it is so popular because it is Beck and it is acoustic and direct stuff from an artist that is famous for being bizarre and cryptic, but there were dozens of great "songwriter" records released those years. Still, I liked it because it was honest.
The post-Sea Change stuff always sounded pathetic and uninspired to me, to a point that I don't care anymore if he's dead or alive. Some of the singles I heard were ridiculously flat and boring for his old standards, yet now he seems more popular and well respected than before!! I think that after Sea Change he hasn't been able to re-invent himself and started recording bad copies of the same formula that made him famous in the 90s. Unluckly for him, by that time there were another zillion artists who were doing the same music, so now he sounds like anybody else in the same category (except for his voice, which is the only thing that actually improved).
also, the fact that he's a scientologist (which translates in "bored rich celebrity") automatically makes his music drop in value in my eyes.

Maybe some people were drawn to it more cos it was from Beck, but it's still a fine, inspired record with barely a duffer on it (i do think it's slightly too long, mind. It slightly loses my interest after awhile) I do kinda agree with you on his output since, though. There's some great tunes here n there, and none of it has been too terrible, but he has certainly been treading the same ground at times.

Beck has been a scientologist since birth, both his parents were scientologists. Don't really see the fuss myself.
Oh and Modern Guilt is really fantastic
