CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND HIS MAGIC BAND: UNDER REVIEW (2006)Without a doubt the most challenging artist of the rock era, the man formerly known as Don Van Vliet still retains an almost biblical dedication amongst the ever-increasing fanbase of ‘those who get it’. You either do or you don’t; the good Captain doesn’t attract the casuals! Captain Beefheart – Under Review is a two hour documentary film tracing the roots and history of this iconic musical legend. Featuring rare live and studio performances of Beefheart, interspersed with contributions from virtually all members of The Magic Band – along with a panel of esteemed experts. The film also features rarely seen promo films, interview footage with Beefheart, TV clips, location shots and a host of other features. This is not simply the only Beefheart DVD on the commercial market, it is also the best ever film about the man and his music yet to emerge. Under Review: the ultimate review and critical analysis of the music and career of Captain Beefheartgot this from a torrent tracker and thought it was good so I turtled it. It's a 2 hour documentary full of footage and interviews with the members of the Magic Band and other Beefheart-related people, very interesting. Not sure it's the best film about the man but sure enough it's good.

I've got a burnt DVD of this from my Lovefilm days. It is interesting & for anyone who's really into his work there is some insightful stuff. However, it's one of those documentary's where (from what I can remember) there is not enough key people interviewed & most of the 2 hours is taken up by a handful of critics that just bang on about what they thought of each record (for better or worse). Anyone who's not seen the BBC documentary which is on youtube should watch that before digging into this. Those 'Under Review' doc's have been made for tons of bands, they are a bit too cheap & cheerful with far too much time spent on the same few critics probably due to them having hardly any budget to interview the important people of the story and a lack of any copyright to be using the artists material yet still if you are into the artist it's still pretty interesting.

Thanks, I'm watching this today tbh
On a side note, I'm gonna use this thread to ask for interesting documentaries about some bands, starting with The Kinks and T.Rex, for example.

thanks Karl for the review. I didn't watch the whole film when I posted, so my opinion was based just on the quick look I gave to see if it worked. I gave it a better look and I have to agree with you.
One thing I'm sure though is how weird those people interviewed are. One was doing the interview on his bed as he was going to sleep but he's wearing sunglasses and a cowboy hat. Another one is doing the interview while he's talking to a phone that hangs from a tree (?). Jesus Christ, drugs do hurt your brain!!
And barny, I can't think of any documentary on the bands you mentioned at the moment, but I can tell you that I'm in love with the "Classic Albums" DVD serie. Have a quick search on amazon or play.com and see what they have in stock. The documentary about Paul Simon I have is extremely well done in my opinion, and I'm really considering to get more because they cost peanuts.

I've a DVD called T-rex on TV which covers all their TV appearances but also comes with a good documentary on Bolan,. I think it was a BBC documentary though I'm unsure of it's title.

Does anyone happen to have a better than 192kbps version of Safe as Milk they fancy ? I've only had this shit one for ages, been trying to download a better quality version but it's been stuck at 39% done in utorrent for about a month. Really need this album on the mp3 player but there's no point at 192kbps.

Just saw it, good documentary, I think there's enough depth in some of the stuff considering in two hours it covers all of their albums, band line up changes, studio techniques, anecdotes... Sure with a character like him there will be a lot of things missing, but I enjoyed it. Loved the environments chosen by the band members too, it seemed nearly logical though Only Doc from Back To The Future scared me a bit, but all in all it was worth. It encouraged me to pick the guitar and try some things but I'm still crippled
