The new Faris Badwan project with singer/instrumentalist Rachel Zeffira.
The album's a bit splendid. In a nutshell- her breathy vocals, his deeper vocals, lush orchestration & pretty melodies which all add up to a sweet little record with a big nod to the 60's.
Three albums from him, all completely different and all decent in their own way. I struggle to think of a more talented young, main(ish)stream, english musician around at the moment. Alex Turner could use some tips from him.

Nah, Alex is doing just fine on his own.

nah, what talent for songwriting Alex Turner once had seems to be disappearing fast as he descends into tedious mediocrity (if the Submarine soundtrack and two teasers from the new AM album are anything to go by anyway)

nah, what talent for songwriting Alex Turner once had seems to be disappearing fast as he descends into tedious mediocrity (if the Submarine soundtrack and two teasers from the new AM album are anything to go by anyway) Tedious mediocrity? I dare you to write something as good as/better than/as imagery filled as this: I etched the face of a stopwatch On the back of a raindrop And did a swap for the sand in an hourglass. I heard a non-happy ending it sort of sounds like you’re leaving I heard the piledriver waltz, it woke me up this morning.
You look like you’ve been for breakfast at the heartbreak hotel And sat in a back booth by the pamphlets and the literature on how to lose. Your waitress was miserable and so was your food. If you’re gonna try and walk on water make sure you wear your comfortable shoes.
Mysteries flashing amber go green when you answer but the red on the rest of the questionnaire never changes. I heard the news that you’re planning to shoot me out of a cannon. I heard the piledriver waltz, it woke me up this morning.
You look like you’ve been for breakfast at the heartbreak hotel And sat in a back booth by the pamphlets and the literature on how to lose. Your waitress was miserable and so was your food. If you’re gonna try and walk on water make sure you wear your comfortable shoes.
Oh, piledriver.
Do it.

That's great.

it is quite a nice verse tbf....the rest of the lyrics are obtuse to the point of meaningless though. It's imagery for imagery's sake. And that is the standout track of the EP.
And come on, challenging someone that doesn't write songs to write something as good as someone writing their fourth album. That's a bit cheap. Do you mean the average punter in the street isn't allowed to criticise now?
Anything i've heard from the pen of alex turner recently just sounds like it's going through the motions.

At least I'll never catch Alex Turner drinking a coffee whilst browsing his laptop in a Camden pub on a Saturday night.
Looking forward to hearing this, the EP had a couple of good tunes on it.

Don't worry, I don't think Rod will follow this route on his side project tbh

Alex Turner could use some tips from him. after one listen this doesn't do anything for me, so it's more like one good, one pointless, and one shockingly bad album by Faris. I don't care much about the Arctic Monkeys, but Submarine, last shadow Puppets and the 'who the Fuck are the Actic Monkeys' EP is a much more solid body of work. Mind you, I would consider neither of them to be 'the most talented young english musician' at the moment, Jamie xx, James Blake or These New Puritans (from the top of my head) for example have far more interesting things going on.
