I have an announcement to make & one which will not be popular with many people on this earth but here it goes. The Gift is the greatest record Paul Weller has ever made. It's taken me many years to reach this conclusion. When I first heard The Gift it confused the hell out of me as it doesn't sound a great deal like what you'd expect from the Jam but as time has gone on I've grown to love it more & more & now it is my favourite Jam LP. I love the variation on the record, the ambition of the tunes & the overall big production whilst still managing to maintain a certain rawness. The only mis-step on the record is The Planner's Dream Goes Wrong which I think comes across as a bit novelty with it's calypso sound & never goes anywhere that interesting. The rest is some of Weller's best ever work. I recommend people revisit it who've not heard it for some time. Also, I think the last three Jam records (Setting Sons, Sound Affects, The Gift) are all better than All Mod Cons which is usually considered as their best LP. Love you forever Weller. This thread is dedicated to Columbia Rocks Man.

The Gift is the greatest record Paul Weller has ever made. You and I both know that that is not true Running on the Spot has to got to be one of my favourite Jam tunes though:

He later described that performance as "one of the highlights" in his career. Karl, what are your thoughts on Illumination? I love it to bits, definitely up there with his best work if you ask me.

I'm not so much of a fan. I think it's a half good record but theres some really uninspired moments on there (+ that track with Kelly Jones). One X One is definitely the highlight though, cracking tune.
I always thought Heliocentric was his real under appreciated record. A strange choice of singles plus the fucking horrible artwork let the record down a bit. Weller sounds inspired on that album, theres even some Love influences in there in places.

one x one is a massive tune.
i listened to heliocentric the other week and yknow what i think it may have been the first time i ever listened to that album. even when i was into weller back in the day i think it was an album that i never actually got. mahoney is right though it is really good, suprised me a lot with the quality throughout.
ive been getting back into weller/the jam again recently along with what i guess youd describe as "mod music" as a whole, listening to lots of small faces/kinks and the who too.
as for the gift, any album with ghosts and town called malice is gonna be pretty fucking decent.
ghosts is probably my favourite weller tune of all time. will never forget the emotional scene in eastenders when kevin wicks AKA JIMMY QUADROPHENIA died and denise his wife was crying to ghosts by the jam.
huge tune

Ghosts is the my favourite tune weller's ever done. 'The gift' has a soft spot in my heart for that, town called malice, happy together, running on the spot...
I still think sound affects is better, but it's probably my 2nd fave Jam album.

Top album spoilt by one utter shit song: "The Planners Dream Goes Wrong". Agree with edmurphs that it starts and finishes strongly.
All Mod Cons is still my favourite though.

Gave it another spin, I just can't get over the production on the vocals, it puts me off.
Sound Affects is, in my opinion, better. The amount of tunes on that album is incredible. Problem with Sound Affects is that it always seems quiet.

You've probably got my old CD rips of the jam records on your computer. A few years ago I re-ripped all my CD's in better quality & whatnot. Get a terabyte external & you can have all my music + my Itunes folder. All the sound is sorted now.
