Ive seen APTBS twice, once in this weird German place from right up front, right between the speakers (cos im hardcore as fuck obv... I'd just gotten into them and had no idea shit was gonna be that loud . I mean fucking hell it was insane) The shit acoustics of this place, some sort of gestapo sm cellar about 5 by 10 meters did wodners as well. At one point halfway in i thought i was gonna pass out, it was not so much that my ears hurt but the loudness made me physically sick. My ears were fucked for about a week, same watery feeling, felt like theres a liter of ear goo dripping into your brain. great gig tho, despite being insanely loud. the other time i saw them they were about half as loud and boring as fuck.. Never felt the need for earplugs at other gigs, I remember once at an Oasis gig it was shit fuck loud but I guess that was cos i was right in front of a large speaker it was by all accounts bareable tho. BJM were quite loud as well but that gig was amazing nonetheless, it was like they created some sort of psychedelic bubble of sound, awesome live sound.

Saw MBV a fews week ago, "doctors" give you free earplugs at the doors... definitely not as loud as APTBS but still very loud, more like "void" noise or maybe was just the venue

haha i went to see fuck buttons a couple of nights ago and was going to resurrect this very thread (haven't bought the earplugs yet)
i thought my bloody valentine were louder tbh, but fuck buttons were definitely in my top 3-4
1. MBV 2. A Place to Bury Strangers 3. Fuck Buttons 4. White Hills 5. The Horrors (but not in a good way, the mixing was fucking abysmal)

I missed this thread. I sometimes use earplugs (especially if my tinnitus is being a cunt) Alpine Music safe (or any alpine) are pretty good, you only really need more expensive ones if you are on stage. (friend who used to be in hot club de paris recommended them, he became paranoid about it after the band split cos the drummer went deaf)
as for loudest bands
SWANS (by some considerable distance) Mogwai MBV White Hills Mind Mountain

The twice I've seen MBV this year I thought they were considerably quieter than when they first reformed in 2008. It could be I'm just more deaf.

I seen Dinosaur Jr twice one was on the weezer cruise and it was the loudest thing I've ever heard.
I'm seeing Metz and Japandroidds next month in a small club I'm really debating wether to buy a set for it.
