right I need a new series to watch and been recommended this as being "as good as the Sopranos and The Wire" which is a big claim. If it's even half as good as that or on a par with Boardwalk Empire i'll give it a shot

it's good. sometimes very, very good but no chance is it in the same galaxy as the wire or the sopranos. gets a bit shit nearer the end, made me lose interest. the characters don't have anywhere the same depth as in the wire or sopranos

The characters were fascinating and had great depth, so i honestly don't know what you're saying there. And for me it got more and more gripping as it build to the brilliant last season and finale, which remains one of the best i've seen. Ignore him Iain, its one of the bestest shows eviiih. Starting to have serious doubts about you, Bazchops. Iain, i'd recommend you OZ. I've just blasted through it. Brilliant stuff Rome is great too. And Prison Break is daft as fuck, but great fun

The Shield is better than The Wire? Really? I might have to actually have to take some notice if it's that decent.

OZ??? I've heard of it but no idea what it is and assumed it was an Aussie show so blanked it cos the telly here is shite. Prison Break, watched the first season then didnt bother, I was watching Lost at that time and it was more than enough silliness. Would the missus be into Rome or just guys due to the boobs and stuff??? If thats good then it might be a good one so I could get the bird into it rather than Corrie & Easties all the fucking time And as for it being better than The Wire?? Jesus, thats some claim Dan. I've got the whole series 1-7 downlooting just now (32GB ) so will get back to you after series 1 with some thoughts.

I prefered The Shield to The Wire, in that i connected with the characters more, i prefered the dynamics and tone, i found it more interesting, and i literally couldn't wait for each episode. I can't speak for anyone else, but me personally i'd take The Shield if i had to choose between the two. I dunno why they're always put up against each other though, as they're quite different, and you can enjoy both. Found Baz's "they're not in the same galaxy" comment worth commenting on though, as i couldn't disagree more. OZ is set in a maximum-security US prison, and is pretty close to The Shield in spirit, and is brilliant. I finally got round to it, after years of people recommending me it, and it actually lived up to the hype. I'd put that over The Wire too Incredibly bleak, though I did love The Wire, but i still find it pretty overrated. Maybe cos every cunt goes on about it like its the greatest thing ever, when personally, at this point, i doubt it'd scrape my all-time top ten shows. Rome has sex, aye, but its a great show, and is in and out in two fantastic seasons. Highly recommend it Iain, and i think your good lady will enjoy it too British-wise, if you've not seen them, Our Friends In The North and Life On Mars are classics too. And both better than.... oh, i'll stop now

I didn't realise Rome was only two series' long. Might have a gander for that on Demonoid.

thanks for the tips/views Dan. I did watch Our Friends in the North when it was first shown on telly, loved it. It was no Spender though one thing though Dan, with all your not liking The Wire chat, where do you put the Sopranos in your all time list?

I DO like The Wire mate Just prefer other shows in terms of an all-time list, leek. The Sopranos would be No.1, no question. LOVED it I think you'll like Rome, Andy. The Ax Man got me into it, and i loved every minute. They had to fit about ten years into the last season, as HBO decided it was way too expensive to make

The Wire and Sopranos could both be quite thoughtful and slow burning for mainstream television, I'm not sure you can really compare them to something like The Shield, they're not really trying to do the same things. Thrills n' spills stuff like 24, Dexter, Prison Break etc would be more The Shield's contemporaries. I got about halfway through Season 3 before my computer went spastic and I lost the thread of it all, not sure I'd ever re-watch them once I'm done but I did get a good dirty buzz while I was watching them, quite looking forward to getting back into it sometime now. What you make of Season 1 cg?
Spiral, the French one that's on BBC4 (and co-produced by I think) is a really excellent, bleak police drama too. Series 1 is good, but 2 especially and 3 are fucking ace (All the series are new cases so you can skip s.1 and it's cunty whizz-bang camera work if you like)

It's pretty good, started off a bit slow and I wasn't sure if I'd stick with it but by mid way through the 2nd season I was staying up til 3am each night watching episode after episode

just finished episode 4 of season 6. seems I've caught up with the torrent I've been using and it's not finished the rest of 6 and all of 7. I will maybe try Oz after I finish this but think I'll leave it for a few months. I've basically done nothing but watch The Shield from mid morning til the wee hours, only stopping for food, to walk the dog and piss. I need to reconnect with the world again I only found out there was an earthquake here yesterday and it happened over a week ago
