Always been surprised at how in this BIG BIG world all my music interests are centered in counted places. Not a new thing and it's quite logical but it's incredible too how the boredom manages to make me invest time in shit lists like this one so... from the top of my head I'd say: 1. UK -> Only for having The Beatles and Oasis they deserve this spot, but the bands forming the "middle class" also add to it. Yep, Scottish, you are here for me. 2. USA -> Just too many to enumerate and I think each year they cut a little the symbolic difference with the first position. 3. Sweden -> There's an abyss here, but the likes of Mando Diao, The Tallest Man On Earth and a bit of The Hives get the podium. 4. Australia -> Represented by Nick Cave and The Vines, I've also been listening to Tame Impala and Cloud Control lately, to get ready for the festival season. 5. Sealand -> Got a feeling that I'm forgetting something that would deserve this placement, but as I can't be sure I'm leaving it like this, for the only reason that otherwise this wouldn't be a top5.

If I consider the stuff I listen to, I guess that would be - UK by far - Canada, just for Arcade Fire - US - Sweden - France for the few french artists I like.

Thanks Chuze, now I can safely say this thread is less disgraceful than Baz's member of the month one.

Shouldn't this be renamed "most prolific countries for producing alternative music in the world"?

No, I wanted people to add his musical preferences and order them by countries in a fancy table with positions. You can start that one though, but I'm sure China will sweep the board.

It's a tie between artists from UK and US, since all the artists from other countries you are exposed to (Swedish, Canadian, Australian etc), are simply pantomiming the anglo-american format of alternative music. There's no point in listing who mimes a stereotype better.
That said, there's a shitload of countries who have a strong musical culture of their own, and that produce awesome traditional music that, unfortunately, we're hardly exposed to:
Chile Brazil Italy India South Africa Cuba Jamaica
etc etc
