Dismissed it myself at the time, i remember giving it some shit here on soapy as well.. (my only post of 2008) Today is the day ive finally grown the balls/lumps to say it's an amazing album. We all can hear its no voyager 1 space rock stuff, nor is it urban hymns. What we do have is an epic opening song, followed by one of the best singles in years (Love is Noise ) and after that it goes deep. Strong points: obvious one: love the overall sound of things, especially the guitar. The cynic in me would say it's a band desperate to sound contemporary and failing. But in reality its more like: what if a band like M83 or A Shoreline Dream weren't fucking comma's and decided to write a decent tune? Long, diverse compositions. Ashcroft is a fantastic singer, dont know if this can be disputed tbh. Amazing singer. Opinions? Mahoney, faceless brad and jorn i see you all give it 3*, ffs.

I gave it a 3? Fucking hell I was feeling generous that day I'll revisit it sometime just for you. I barely listened to it when it came out which is remarkable considering the Verve comeback gigs were some of the best gigs I've ever seen & I was so excited about the record when it was announced.

Yeah, i quite enjoy it too. Easily their weakest, but there's some decent moments on it indeed. I actually think Love Is Noise is brilliant. I caned the fuck out of that when it first came out. Was well exciting when they ended their Glasto set with it too

There's some quality b-sides from that time too - Mama Soul and Mover are brills I think

Mover, yes, big tune. Love is Noise I never understood the hate for. Then again, I've always hated The Drugs Dont Work...
Appalachian Springs, big, big tune.

I think that Mover was written around Northern Soul period, mind hehe
Rather Be is one of their best ballads i reckon. Ashcroft's voice is corking on that
That last record he made was totally laughable though, sadly. So bloody bad

Alone with everybody *was* great. The 2nd one was shit. Just terrible.
I loved forth when it came out, but I haven't bothered with it in eons. Loved 'sit and wonder' too.

Heh, I liked Are You Ready, but the rest of that record was comedy bad
Haha that was a track on his debut, Karlos. "I built a boat from bamboo ..... BUT IT SUNK"
Amazing lyric. Really sums up the frustration of being stranded on a desert island with the bird from Spiritualized

There's enough on the album, for me, to warrant it's existance and make it worthy of The Verve name. I fucking love The Verve. It's definetly too long and there's some duff tunes on there but Sit and Wonder, Love Is Noise, Rather Be, Judas, Valium Skies and Appalachian Springs are tunes. I quite like Noise Epic as well but it's obviously a bit silly. Mover is a tune as well. The gigs were amazing. They were better in 97 though when I first saw them

Sit and Wonder alone would make it worthwhile tbh, sounds amazing live. Columbo's great too though.

the verve are still in my top ten gigs of all time. amazing really considering i never have consider myself to be a massive fan of theirs. argree though that despite love is noise being a huge single, the rest of forth was a bit pony.

THEY WERE WELL BETTER IN 1993 WHEN I FIRST SAW THEM
forth is a dog of a record though, I'd be surprised if I ever listened to anything ashcroft recorded again.

Haha that was a track on his debut, Karlos. "I built a boat from bamboo ..... BUT IT SUNK" I know where its from, I just like to see you mention it every time Ashcroft gets a mention. It's tradition.
