Yes, but he goes on to say that the number tailed off massively after the initial surge. I seem to recall it sold something like 200K in the first week in the states, so 3 million in the first month, let's say, after all of us bought it (including the worldwide figures)...would it sell 3 million in the next 5 after the reviews started to say "this is shit"? I dunno...maybe, but it seems like a lot.
To the wikipedias!
"By the end of 1997, Be Here Now had sold eight million units worldwide."
Well then. The internet has never lied to me before...

'How can it supposedly sell an amount of records? ' One would assume he's calling 'bullshit' on that number. 8 million in six months seems high to me, too. I didn't even think be here now had sold 8 million, period. Who is supposedly knocking up these numbers though? Just seems a very odd thing to put in an article. As of 2008 Be here now had sold over 8 million units according to wiki.

For what it's worth, I really like Klosterman as a writer (mostly his books), but his taste in music is unassailably appalling. His faves *actually* include Led Zeppelin and Kiss.

love the fact how all the Noel haters dont mention anything about what Noel said about his next album it's going to be fucking brilliant.far too brilliant for those fucking mongos. Seriously, I can see it now. A grey-haired, bearded Noel, sitting on a bar stool with an acoustic guitar. He looks out at the all-seated crowd in the Richmond Coliseum. "This ones called Up in the Sky" he says, as a 50-year-old Evan whoops from row XXX. "There's actually a funny story about when Oasis recorded this, all those years ago. You'll never believe it, but, Liam, he turned up drunk! Glad those days are over." and Liam will still be singing about singing songs and wanting to rock n roll? I'll be glad to be at Noel's gig.

To be fair, Klosterman is one of the few US journalists who genuinely respects Oasis and is also a respected critic. He has some odd taste, but he's always been in the Gallaghers' corner, so I give him a pass on some of his more awkward points.
Anyway, Grantland is a pretty big site over here. it's supported by ESPN and I check it daily for their sports / culture pieces, so to see an Oasis-themed piece this morning was really cool. I was all giddy in my cube.
