The Wire - Season 3 - 8.5/10After having enjoyed the second series I expected things to continue as they were, very good but not exactly special, but this season was excellent. Watched it in about a third of the time it took to get through season 2. Cutty's subplot chimed perfectly alongside the unrelenting pursuit of the "game" in Hamsterdam. Which by the way, I thought was an ideal vehicle for the series, especially coupled with Carcetti's storyline. It also gave time for Stringers character to climax, which to be honest I wasn't expecting. Thought Avon would have been the one to go, although at this point obviously I'm not sure if we'll be seeing any more of him, but presumably we shall.
Omar and Brother Mouzone cornering Stringer was the highlight of the series, for me. Slim Charles deserves a mention too. @ Cutty's real name being Dennis Wise. Can't wait to get stuck into season 4. Oh and Ana, 2 stars? Pfft.

Paul (2011 - Not one of those many other films from other years called Paul ) First 15 minutes or so are pretty slow and unfunny and i was really worried this would be dire, but all of a sudden it gets good and i found myself getting into it. Very likeable, enjoyable cast an all. Actually better than i imagined it'd be judging by the reviews and opinions i've heard and read, so that's nice eh Ultimately a bit of lighthearted fare, with the odd decent laugh

Thought you were an Empire reader, Dan? Didn't they give it 4 stars? Still need to get round to watching this.

lock stock and two smoking barrels (1998)snatch is one of my most watched films of all time but bizarrely enough i think this might be the first ever time ive sat through the whole of lock stock. had always just caught bits and pieces on tv in the past. good stuff though and holds up suprisingly well as i thought it might be very dated. 8.5

Thought you were an Empire reader, Dan? Didn't they give it 4 stars? Still need to get round to watching this. I get it now n again, and got this month's, but not bothered reading their review. They suck off anything Pegg is involved in, so i never really believe what they're saying I hope Pegg is reteaming with Edgar Wright next, for the third in the Shaun/Fuzz "trilogy" though, as they're clearly much better working together than apart (see also: Scott Pilgrim) Nick Frost co-wrote this one, and the script sorely lacks the energy and sharpness and laughs that Pegg n Wright come up with. Motola isn't as inventive a director as Wright either, so its all a little blander there too Small gripes though really, as its a fun little film on its own merits. The alien is done pretty well, and was strangely likeable. And Kristen Wiig is brills, innit

Empire feels a bit too hype-loving for my taste. Too much NME vibe. But their actor interviews are usually more enjoyable than TF's though.

It's Kind Of A Funny Story (2010) I was afraid of a boring Zach Galifianakis comedy but he turned in a great mellow performance. Really enjoyed it. The story line is half and half and you have to buy the idea of a teenager being placed in a mental hospital for just a week and which have schizos and regularly depressed people on the same floor. But if you buy those two things you will probably enjoy the film. It has some great characters and even though it has some quirky tendencies like a lot of "indie movies" as of late it stays on the right side and doesn't try too damn hard. It trusts its characters and it has a really great score by Broken Social Scene. Enjoyable and it sure is better than Juno. 7/10

Empire is pretty fucking atrocious. I'm shocked I bought it for a few months to be honest. Unless you are interested in only films that cost more than 100 million dollars to make or a fan of fucking super hero films you've no need to ever read it.

Yeah, it's been awful for awhile now. Was pretty decent about 3 or 4 year back. These days it's basically a puff piece (non-critical bumlick, basically) for the big studio shit Though funnily enough, this month's i felt was a big improvement. There's a pretty funny article on Moonwalker Kim Newman is the most spoilery reviewer i've ever come across too. The massive cunt.

His dungeon & the review section were the only bits I found myself wanting to read. I've got the hump just thinking about that magazine.
Mind you I doubt there are any magazines that would satisfy my tastes. I'd want a 17 page Charles Bronson pullout in every issue.

Never given Total Film a chance then? (You too Dan)
It has its flaws with the big movie focus as well sometimes, but it has a bit more in-depth articles and a bigger respect to the reader in terms of knowledge and that the reader actually can think a coherent thought without help.

[090] Mad MaxSo bad-ass, so stylish, so cool. The plot is a bit average when you think about it but it has a good production design and some interesting shots and it's just a classic, innit.

Yeah, read it a handful of times. Should get it more often, really. Might buy it on the way home tomorrow. It comes in two different sizes, doesn't it?
