I am majorly disappointed. Not only are they straying way far off the comics, but the story in this first episode didn't grab me at all. Some guy on Reddit summed up ALL my feelings and reasons to hate this season premiere: (SPOILERS)
1. Crossbow guy wants a motorcycle - cool. But how loud a bike do you really want to be driving?
2. Only one guy goes on the roof to watch for zombies. Somehow he only sees them when they are right on the group.
3. Black guy has wandered way up ahead. Almost kills himself as he... tries to sit down?
4. Kids are "exploring". In a zombie-infested world. The kids are exploring. "Stay where I can see you honey...". How about "stay tied to my back"?
5. Zombies can't smell all these humans and walk on by for the most part???
6. The blonde in the RV tries to assemble a gun that she doesn't know how to assemble, when all she needed to do was be quiet.
7. Zombie sees the girl and chases. One guy runs off to help her? One? The mom doesn't run along also? Then she basically insults them for not keep looking? How about YOU go look then, it's your fucking kid FFS
8. The next day they set out with the sun high in the sky. Really you guys slept in with a little girl missing? They get into some big debate about giving blond her gun or not. Again, a girl is missing folks.
9. Oh now let's stop and pray. How dumb would the mom feel if they arrived 10 seconds too late to save her daughter, all from stopping to pray?
10. Now let's talk about the affair we had. Yeah, this conversation never happened in the comics cause the guy gets killed off by the boy. Which should've happened in series one, this actor sucks.
11. Now let's talk about running away.
12. Now the sheriff needs to pray. No rush.
13. More debate over giving blondie a gun.
14. Ooh a deer. Go ahead kid, walk up to it. We have nothing better to do. Hey it isn't running away (which would sound alarm bells in my head). Oh wow a hunter saw the deer, but not us, shot the deer right at that moment and the bullet went right through and hit you. What are the odds.
Meh. I'm going back to reading the comics, done with the series.

I love how that guy summarizes his criticism and half of the points relate to unnatural behaviour.
He do realize he's trying to rationalise a world where there's fucking zombies walking around, right?
I can buy point 10 though but the rest is just ridicilous nitpicking that can be done for every single movie or tv-series ever made.

Yeah I see your point, but really the writing itself wasn't good at all, say compared to other series like Breaking Bad or maybe Lost. I read this was the last episode written by the team that got the sack, so hopefully it will get better as the series progresses. What? So I HAVE to like it just cause of what it is? I enjoyed the gruesome zombie-killing scenes, a lot, trust me. It's just the characters that don't really grab me at all. Like I said, hopefully it will get better as it goes on. The previews show them running into the farm with the family, which is a storyline from the comics, a very good storyline. We'll see how they make it work.

It's the sound of my heart breaking at the fact that I studied TV production and don't have an outlet to vent my frustrations with shitty TV writing .

I have to agree with Ana. The opening episode of Season 1 was incendiary, absolute balls to the wall brilliance. The rest was middling to shit. I was intrigued enough to read the comics afterwards and they were much improved. There were stronger characters, stronger plotting, it was a bit more fucked up and a lot scarier and it wasn't nearly as corny (that being said the dialogue in the comic is utterly woeful at times).
From what I've seen and heard about the Season 2 I think it will be best to steer clear. With the creative troubles, budget cuts, deviation from the story and the fact is seems to be getting dumber and dumber I'd rather stick with the comics.

The series could never live up to the amazingness of the first episode of the first season, but it's still good tv. No need to freak out over every little thing, just sit back and enjoy it.
