After 18 years of waiting, one of the most sought after items in the Oasis vault leaked out of nowhere yesterday: The four discs of safety masters from the original Definitely Maybe recording sessions with Dave Batchelor at Whitfield Studio.
My highlights:
1. Fade Away (Take 1 w/ backing vox, no lead vox) - this is the original version that was set to appear on DM, minus Liam's lead vocals unfortunately. A million times better than the version they re-recorded with Owen Morris that appeared later on the C&A single. If you're an Oasis fan, you HAVE to hear this. Note the phenomenal use of an E-bow throughout
2. Slide Away (Mix 2 - Bass Up) - an excellent, more understated version using the original backing track
3. Up In The Sky (Mix 4 - Louder Vox) - version with the backwards guitars referred to by Anjali Dutt on DM documentary
4. Bring It On Down (Master Backing Track) - instrumental version with lots of dynamics and a killer bass line. More E-bow on this one
5. Columbia (Mix 2 - More Bass & Rhythm Guitar) - I still prefer the final mix that appears on the album, but this is an excellent alternate version
6. Live Forever (Master Version) - this version isn't brick walled and sounds so much more dynamic and enveloping than the album version
7. Live Forever (Mix 1) / Digsy's Dinner / Up In The Sky (Mix Sequence) - 41 minutes of bliss
Anyway, nearly 5 hours of material to sift through. I had lost hope that we would ever hear this and was shocked that it leaked yesterday.
Next up, the Be Here Now mystique demos!
