p.s. i know for some of you british is not foreign...whatever
p.s.2. Scandinavian mightve been 3rd, dont know

german cinema has been excellent in the 00s with films such as goodbye lenin and the edukators being some of my favourite of the decade. ive also always been a big fan of french new wave cinema with directors like truffaut, luc-godard, rohmer and then more recently jeunet being some of my favourites. also i know hes austrian but michael haneke is one of my favourite directors and has done several french language films so he counts too innit. also wanna see more films from the italian neo-realism genre as the odd one i have seen has been excellent. asian film-makers seem good at horror and are very inventive in that genre but overall i dont think ive seen enough variety in other genres of films from them.
if im honest though despite having a pretty big interest in foreign cinema, im still not knowledgable enough about any of those nations films and am still in the process of scratching the surface so it would be silly to say anything other than american cinema tbh. however as that is not an option in the poll even though its foreign to me dammit, im gonna go for french as they have a larger history of great films even though germany has probably been better in recent years.

I completely hate Swedish films. I don't know what it is but it sounds like every actor is reading from a script and with this theatre tone of voice.
Completely destroys ever damn film.. apart from the odd case like Together, Let The Right One In etc.
I can't say anything else than American films are the best. But that is solely down to the amount of movies coming out from there. It'll always be easier to stumble upon a lot more ggreat films from the States than it is from for example France.
But to answer the question... Danish movies have a very high standard. Especially for drama. But I can't stand, as I said, Swedish movies so can't vote for Scandinavia.
So I'll go with France.

The only films I really watch that aren't in English are Japanese or Korean.

heh I was just going to say that Baz
If I had to choose I guess outside of America & Britain I'd say Italian, big fan of their Spaghetti Western's, They took all the elements that make the American Western great & add so much more in terms of visuals, action, violence & changing the formula & way we see Western's, instead of the good VS bad quite often the hero or person you are routing for can be a right motherfucker. Then theres the Giallo genre that gave us the key elements that later would become Slasher's in the late 70's/early 80's in America, some really top Giallo films with lots of good kills & fucked up plot twists. Then any type of 70's genre films that were popular in America the Italians had a go at, usually on a much smaller budget & quite often really shoddy but I kinda like alot of that crap.
Like alot of Asian films though at the time time alot of them leave me left a little cold probably by being so different to what I'm used to seeing. Theres been some great/disturbing horror films in the past 20 years then I tend to like any kind of action films made in Asia, usually alot more gutsy & in your face than Western flms. Then of course you've got the martial arts genre which has given us so many great films.
Outside of Asia & Italy I've enjoyed films from most countries though not as much as I'd like of course.

Not a great fan of European films but from what I've watched I would say French and British films are the best

Pedro Almodóvar and Alejandro Amenábar are really excellent directors, I think. 'Thesis' is basically on every film school's program over here, it's insane. So is Buñuel but I don't really rate him, crazy bastard.

I can't stand Almodóvar or his films, but yeah, there are some good films every now and then (Amenábar being probably the only director consistently making good movies). Celda 211 was a surprise last year I can see a Hollywood remake in the future.

Mar Adentro is a true story btw it happened not very far from where I live. Bardem did a great job, he worked a lot in the local accent and the typical Galician character.
