I knew they were playing Shepherds bush through facebook, I'd no idea they'd shortened their name though.
Had already bought Latitude tickets so that is a bonus.

It's OK. Decent enough. Saturday laura marling, richard hawley and horrors is tasty and weller, Josh T & dexys. I'll check out Janelle Monáe just because everyone says she's so great live. The rest either doesn't appeal to me or I've never heard of.

ok well my top ten must sees are...
WELLER perfume genius sbtrkt bon iver janelle monae the horrors sharon van etten low m83 dexys
other more obvious stuff im looking forward to is bat for lashes, hawley, kurt vile, josh t pearson and herman dune
as for newer smaller stuff, id recommend some of the following as being stuff you might like...
sissy and the blisters - remind me a bit of vaccines/horrors kinda stuff but seem pretty cool
i break horses - kinda epic sounding scandanavian shoegazey stuff bit sigur ros, kissaway trail stuff like that.
wooden shjips - psychedelic 60s influenced rock
gross magic - saw these support yuck. shoegazey indie pop.
kwes - token black act at latitude. loving this tune at the moment.
toy - been supporting the horrors on tour a lot recently. sound like what youd expect from a horrors support band really.
iceage - danish punk band. might be fun to see live, sound rowdy.
splashh - been enjoying this a lot recently. similar to yuck and bands like that.
soko - crazy french bird, this song was everywhere a few years ago then she disappeared. shes back now.
so yeah a few bits and pieces there. let me know if theres any that take your fancy. clashfinder will be done soon as official times should be posted by the weekend so il post it here when its done.
van dyke parks is playing in the film and music tent too which i think will be pretty cool, deffo wanna catch that. the lamarr thing doesnt look quite so good this year but wanda jackson is playing again and she was excellent last year.
in terms of other stuff il probably catch john cooper clarke and scroobius pip in the poetry tent. PAT NEVIN is in the literary arena too haha.
oh yeah and levellers are playing an acoustic gig in the forest on saturday night. might go up there and cause carnage and heckle. let me know if you fancy it.

I saw Toy support Electric Soft Parade last year, they were a really decent live act but wasn't blown away on the recorded stuff I heard, reminded me a bit of The Fall live in musical terms, they had a lot of really driving and pulsing rhythms where the the songs just build and build.
As said sounded good live, may be worth a watch.

Are The Crookes and The Antlers worth seeing then?
|
|
|
Post by jp on Jul 10, 2012 7:25:01 GMT
not massively so tbh. crookes are similar kinda stuff to bands like the heartbreaks, 80s influenced indie pop. i quite like them but nothing amazing.
the antlers i cant quite make my mind up about, theyre kinda similar to stuff like band of horses but seem a bit more womanly like that. ive picked them as theres nothing else that bothers me too much on at that time and ive a feeling they could be pretty epic live. could equally be shit though

Beautiful Mini review of the festival. I was ill as fuck leading up to Latitude with Tonsillitis and almost never ended up going. Bit of a gutter cos last minute when I did decide to go I wasn't prepared with enough booze for the weekend and hadn't charged my phone which was a bit of a bitch but it all worked out alright in the end. Started the festival with Danish hardcore punk band Ice Ace Pretty decent at first but after a few tracks they just all sounded the same to me. I think I saw the Soft after this though I cannot even remember what they sounded like. After this I met up with JP & then the festival really kicked off. TIM TEN YEN who I described to JP as 'some cunt with a casio keyboard and a mechanical cat.. he's shit but you will like it' & needless to say JP dug it and TIM TEN YEN smashed it, probably the best gig ever. Next I saw First Aid Kit on the main stage, I quite like the album and they were decent live but nothing too memorable, glad I saw them at a festival rather than paying to see them. Next I saw The War On Drugs, I wasn't overly keen on their album from last year, it felt a bit lifeless. Live however they were a different animal and I really enjoyed their set, good stuff. I think I saw a bit of The Antlers after this, looked shit. Saw the opening track of DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS who were one of the main reasons I got a ticket for. It looked fucking horrible Left sharpish to get a spot down the front for Janelle Monae who was fantastic. Again, I never really got the album by her, it felt she had a stab at every genre without ever taking claim of any of her own yet live fucking hell what a performer & what a band. Amazing stuff, reminded me of what seeing Prince or Jacko would of been like in their prime. Next I saw Lana Del Ray, she was OK. Was quite funny hearing all the screaming at the front everytime she flicked her hair or did anything. She did her best 5 songs and fucked off, was ok for what it was. Was pretty pissed by now, may or may not of seen a bit of Metronomy, dunno. Finished it off with Bon Iver who was OK. If he'd been on at 3pm in the day I'd of probably of enjoyed it but as a headliner & being pretty smashed it just felt a bit dull. But that wasn't it! TIM TEN YEN was performing in some little tent again & smashed it once again, other shit in the tent was also very amusing and me and JP got down. Saturday there was 3 bands I wanted to see on at once in sharon van etton, splashh & Sissy and the blisters yet somehow I ended up watching a bunch of 40 year olds called the The Establishment playing BRITPOP. JP told me later that Dion Dublin is their manager They were shit but yeah I quite enjoyed it Then I saw Dingus Khan, ok from what I remember and some other shit on that stage which I forget now. Next was Josh T. Pearson, despite me seeing him about six times do the same songs and jokes he can never fail to win me over and he had me in a trance watching him as usual. Amazing man, I love him. Think after this I didn't see anything for a while until Richard Hawley who was quite frankly a bit disappointing. Not a huge fan of his new album but expected the new stuff to sound epic live but I dunno, the set really never got going for me & it wasn't anywhere near as good as the last time I saw him. The bird wanted to see Laura Marling next who I am a big fan of but I knew her set would do nothing for me live & it was just like the Bon Iver thing, no good at 8pm at night for me to see. Finished with The Horrors in the tent who were fucking fantastic. I saw them loads when they were shit and I hated them supporting people and I think the only other time I've seen them since they were good Sam got me too pissed and I didn't remember a thing about it. Amazing set, the tent was full of kids going mental. I think the band were surprised with 1 the size of the tent and 2 the crowd reaction. Really was buzzing. Sunday I watched Rufus Wainwright on the grass, not a fan and expected to hate him but it was OK I guess. Alabama Shakes were up next which I watched due to Jamie recommending them so highly. I thought the set started kind of decent but nothing memorable but as they went on they really won me over & I was left wanting more by the time they left. Watched some forgettable stuff on the lake stage then saw M83. I dug the energy and they had the crowd going & a few tunes weren't bad but overall I thought they felt incredibly corny & generally a bit shit. Not sure what I did after this, not alot probably but saw about 2 songs of Ben Howard, fuck knows who he is or how he was so high on the bill but yeah, a load of shit. Weller headlined & gave a set of mostly stuff from the past 3 records which I think tested the large crowd's patience a little but eventually he got the big tunes out like You Do Something To Me, Changing Man & Broken Stones. Also thrown in was stuff like In The City, Art School, Start & Eton Rifles. Top set & Weller looked like he was loving it. I'd imagine quite a few there might of been disappointed by the first half but for me the set was great, Weller with a fire in his belly again really good. Finished the set off with CHINESE ELVIS , a Chinese bloke.. doing Elvis which ended up being far much better than it had any right to be Atmosphere in the tent was fantastic and was a good end to the festival. All in all it was a good festival, lineup I felt could of been better and I wish I had taken more spirits and shit cos the bar was a bit of a joke & wish I had more phone battery so I could of met up with JP a bit more but yeah, a good time just felt a bit short I want to do another festival now. In a nutshell I saw Tim Ten Yen twice and Chinese Elvis.

I thought the same about The Horrors at T, easily the best set I'd seen that weekend (aside from the Roses). Massive great sound, majority of the crowd were smashed and having it, and I had to nip away for a shit during the middle of it . I've been listening to them a fair bit since (apart from the GASH debut).

thought id better write who i saw before i forget.... got there on the thurs and latitude put on free food and booze for their TOP FORUM MEMBERS so i went along to that and fair play to them, unlimited free booze was ace and melvin benn the owner of festival republic came along to chat as did jon dunn the music booker for the festival and tania harrison the arts booker. hopefully ive sorted it so bdi play next year. then went into the woods for dermot olearys indie disco but was smashed by that point. went back to the tent and fell asleep after a sausage and chips friday i started the day with ICE AGE who i quite enjoyed. worked well opening the festival properly and was funny seeing the old people walk away in disgust whilst a load of 14 year olds started circle pits. went over to the main stage and watched GIVERS who were fairly average indie pop. headed over to the lake stage for TIM TEN YEN where i met mahoney for one of the performances of the decade. what a man tim is. then i saw DESTROYER who were really enjoyable, followed by WAR ON DRUGS who were really suprising live and put in one hell of a set. THE ANTLERS were next and were proper shit, i kinda dont mind the albums when im in the right mood but fuck me they were dull live. at karls persuasion i then watched the opening couple of songs of DEXYS who were pretty bad, despite everyone else i spoke to at the festival saying they were amazing. anyway i got my way and persuaded karl to leave and get a good spot for JANELLE MONAE who was stunning. proper live show with great tunes and definate festival highlight. at this point my bird phoned to say she was arriving so i went to get her and we arrived in time for BON IVER who we'd both been really looking forward to but he didnt quite live up to our expectations. was still pretty good but i dunno, i was expecting better. when then went to this tiny tent where TIM TEN YEN was playing again which was equally amazing. it then turned into a dj set where we all got nice and big. when this finished we went outside to the DISCO SHED and continued dancing there. saturday started with SHARON VAN ETTEN whose lp is one of my favourites of this year. she was really good live but i think id enjoy her even more in a more intimate session and will have to try and catch her on tour. JOSH T PEARSON followed who was amazing as always. LOW were up next and a band id wanted to see for years. they were good but by this point i was getting a bit bored with all the slow american music i was seeing, despite loving all 3 acts, in a row it was a bit much and i could have done with some all the young or something with a bit more balls. anyway during low i went to the front and the bird stayed nearer the back to meet her mate. half way through low she texts me a picture of her and josh t pearson saying "just chilling at the back of the tent watching low" the bitch. would have love to have met josh but least i can live safe in the knowledge now that josh t pearson has had his arm around something i have fucked. after this we saw THE CROOKES who i quite like, one of these 80s influenced indie bands like frankie and the heartstrings/the heartbreaks etc nothing special but exactly what i needed at that point so i enjoyed them. TOY followed who were ok but i was expecting more from them tbh. we then went to see SBTRKT who were one of my must sees and they were real fucking good. sound wasnt ideal for them though and i cant wait to see them again in TCOTU in october. now throughout the year id always planned on seeing the horrors over ELBOW but with elbow started 15 mins before the horrors i could hear them come onstage and thought they sounded really good so went over to see them and stayed for the whole set. now ive seen elbow twice before and both times thought they were ok but nothing more. this time though i was really suprised and blown away i must admit. they seem to put on the show of their lives and really live up to the headliner billing, something that bon iver didnt seem to be able to do. nice fireworks at the end of elbows set too though obviously nothing compared to the stone roses ones. after this we went to SCROOBIUS PIP in the poetry tent which again was a really nice suprise. made me annoyed i hadnt bothered seeing him before when hes played norwich and il definitley catch him next time. then went into the literary tent at abou 130am where robin ince and josie long were meant to be doing some comedy thing. i was knackered though and started falling asleep so went back to the tent and crashed out. we had to leave late sunday night as the bird has work mon morning so we packed all the stuff away and put it in the car sunday morning which meant i missed alabama shakes who i quite wanted to see but thought they sounded pretty good as we walked about. first band we saw were GROSS MAGIC who i had seen supported yuck a while ago and really liked. i thought they were a lot better this time and look forward to the album. next up were PEACE another band id seen as support recently when they played with mystery jets. they were ok but not very memorable. BATTLES were up next who are one of those bands i feel i should like more than i actually do. live though they were really fucking good and i must go back to the albums. really lively interesting stuff but unfortunately had sound problems and came on late so could only do a short set. went to see BAT FOR LASHES next who was enjoyable before going into the woods to get a good spot for perfume genius who was an absolute must see for me. we saw the bulk of OTHER LIVES in there who were pretty dull before seeing SLOW CLUB who i always thought i quite liked but it turns out they are absolute annoying cunts and one of the worst bands ive ever seen. FUCK OFF SLOW CLUB. it was then time for PERFUME GENIUS who is gay as fuck and i love him. was amazing how silent the crowd was considering it was a festival and it was a proper special set, best of the festival. we then went to see PAUL WELLER before leaving. he was a million times better than last time i saw him but it helps that i really rate the new lp as his set was heavily based on this. as bruv says though some hits were brought out eventually and actually sounded good this time whereas when i saw him at v2005 everything sounded so cheesey. overall another top latitude. probably my favourite lineup ever and i discovered TIM TEN YEN. cant wait to do it all again next year
