I've seen the reissues of their albums remastered so where should I start? I know Ogdens Nut Gone Flake is their magnus opus, but don't know if it's the best starting place. Then the likes of Here Come The Nice and Itchycoo Park seem to appear in different compilations but were they officially released in any album or just in the US?

Small Faces albums are confusing as fuck. They have two albums called Small Faces one on decca and the other on immediate and the track listings differ from the US & UK issues.
I pretty much enjoy almost every song they ever put out minus a couple of the very late ones so I'd recommend just grabbing the entire lot.

Not sure about that, I prefer to start with small doses and expand it if I'm interested. Otherwise I'll probably get overwhelmed and never want to listen to them again.
SO WRITE DOWN A STARTING POINT

I have ogden's nut gone flake, the autumn stone (which I didn't realize at the time was a comp) and a two-disc "ultimate collection" with all the big songs (first disc decca, 2nd disc immediate)...pretty happy with that.
As mahoney says, trying to sort out what's on what is almost as confusing as the stones first 4-5 UK/US albums.
***If 'the autumn stone' is part of the reissue package, get that as a starting point.

SO WRITE DOWN A STARTING POINT I'd go for the second Small Faces self titled record, I think it's known as from the beginning in America but some of the tracks overlap onto the also U.S 'From the Beginning' which has some of their greatest singles. I really don't know how to answer the question they are an awkward band with their releases. Odgens is definitely their best but the narration & strangeness might mean the Immediate 'small Faces' era will be a better starting point. The Decca debut is much more straight up 60's British R&B though they had such a raw sound and then Steve's vocals which made them so great. Just grab one & try it out. Like I said, I dig almost every tune they ever did except for some of the singles & bits that ended up on autumn stone but even most of that is golden.

Barny, this is the one I would recommend, I think it's the one Karl is talking about too: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_Faces_(1967_album)Get the UK version, the US version is called 'There are but four Small Faces' and has some of the singles included in the tracklist. Its a similar thing to a lot of 60's British albums from The Beatles, Stones & Kinks where they chose different tracklistings for the US market (Usually just incorporating successful non album UK singles'. I don't think the 'hit singles' like Itchycoo Park, Here Comes The Nice & Tin Soldier appeared on any albums, they where stand along singles (Though Lazy Sunday is on Ogdens Nut Gone Flake)

Yeah that is the record. Are these remasters in mono or stereo? The 67 Small Faces LP sounds very different depending on which mix you have.

It's like the Beatles thing, certain tunes benefit Stereo & others mono. Just grab one and give it a go.

The compilation with the decca tracks and immediate tracks is pretty much all you need , 50 or so tunes on there.
Avoid confusion barny, and just get that.
