aha but yeah axl, don't be silly, if there's one band you should love, then it has to be The Kinks.
I think (and this comes from a non-english, so mind you!) no one has captured the proper spirit of the european 60s better than the Kinks. You won't get the beatles-esque far out experimentations and you won't get the Stones' winks to american music, but the themes The Kinks used to write about were the issues most of europeans were facing at that moment: paying the rent, wanting to go to Australia to start a new life, having to face a new economy and the vanishing of old staples of the pre-50s culture (which is what the "Village Green" concept is all about), wanting to escape and remembering the good old days, basically.
I assume having to listen to 7 or 8 records in a row just to get into the band will let you down immediately, so here is a number of essential songs I think you will enjoy as a starter:
Sunny Afternoon Dead End Street Mr Pleasant I'm Not Like Everybody Else
Harry Rag Tin Soldier Man Waterloo Sunset Wonderboy (Lennon's favourite Kinks tune) Autumn Almanac (my favourite tune)
The Village Green Preservation Society Picture Book Starstruck All of My Friends Were There
Yes Sir, No Sir Some Mother's Son Shangri-La
Strangers Lola Apeman
it's just 19 songs and I think it will serve as a great introduction to possibly the greatest band ever.

I love The Kinks but I can see why some would be sick of You Really Got Me, or whatever.

You Really Got Me isn't The Kinks best song but have you ever listened to Arthur for example, axl? Fantastic album and well, pretty much anything they did from 66 to 71 is amazing. Possibly my favourite band ever.
