Have never really been embraced as a rock n roll band by most people, this is by the bands own admission, and partly why they attempted to record shit glossy stadium rock albums in the late 70's. For me I think this is why I could never really get into the kinks as they always seemed to lack confidence, and their sound was never really here nor there for me.
Nevertheless I thought I would give them another chance. I armed myself with the logic that I absolutely love the small faces, and so theres no reason why I shouldnt love this band, the small faces and kinks dont really sound overly similar, my logic was more aimed at the british music hall and traditional british pop elements that seemed to more often than not; engulf both bands.
This weekend it was arranged that I would have every essential recording from Face to Face all the way up to Muswell Hillbillies. Boy was I fucking ready. I got myself a nice cold drink and some crisps, I finished my crisps, and while moving my tongue around my gums to dislodge those fucking bits that always seem to be welded onto your gums I noticed 400 songs, "fuck me" I casually said to myself. I had a cigarette and then I was ready, I never felt so ready.
I sat down and plugged in my state of the art headphones, and before pressing play, I immediately felt like Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.
Face to Face had 48 tunes, bonus tracks, alternate takes, and mono / stereo versions of each song. The rest of the albums were even worse and had in excess of 60-70 songs. I then sunk into an abyss of black shit.
To salvage this dreadful experience I quickly did a google search, I knew I would find the definitive opinion of at least one die hard kinks fan. I love ultimate opinions, they are so powerful, like me, although I wasnt feeling powerful at all, I felt like I'd been fucked in the ass.
Dedicated follower of fashion was playing in full blast, a song that, had I been around all those years ago, would have been written about me, but I had no time to think of this now, I had to find a solution and instead of finding a solution, what I found was mass arguments over what version of what song is definitive and best, bannings, and just general bellends who sound like Krburg only 30 years older. (no offense krapburger)
The imagery at this point was like something out of a stephen king novel. It is now safe to say that I will never ever ever listen to this band ever again.

What flavour of drink and crisps do you choose for this? It may have had an effect on the subsequent outcome Kinks are great, shame you don't like them. They are quality though

A fanta and mccoys sweet chilli.
It was a really bad overall experience m8 I went in liking 10 or so kinks songs, and I came out feeling like I've been shafted by the devil.
No wonder there is a dark mystery as to why they were banned from america for years.
This band is just too dark for me.

Why start with that much?? Surely better to pick your way through a greatest hits/singles collection and then progress to 'village green...'

As a general rule of an artist I like Id agree....much prefer the studio albums but if I'm just trying to get into someone normally just start with a compilation and dip in and out until (hopefully) something clicks....then I delve a bit deeper

I'm not a fan of compilation records either -- but you really need them with some bands. The Kinks have an awfully messy discography, with UK/US releases, single-only songs, re-re-re-prints etc. My advice is that you get a nice compilation that covers the 'early Kinks', 1964/1965. This would give you a view of the early singles everybody knows (You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, See My Friends, Set Me Free, Till the End of the Day etc) and hopefully some hidden gems of that era (She's Got Everything etc). There's no reason to listen to the early records themself at this point in their discography, since they sounded pretty much put together around the big singles. Then I'd go into Face to Face. The basic Face to Face has 14 songs + 3 bonus songs really worth a listen (I'm Not Like Everybody Else, Mister Pleasant and Dead End Street). Something Else is 13 songs + Autmun Almanac and Wonderboy. Village Green is 15 songs + Days Arthur or the Decline is 12 songs + Plastic Man Lola has non bonus tracks worth listening no need to drown in an ocean of mono/stereo bonus tracks, alternate takes and shit.

Ax man, all you need is:
Face to Face Something Else Village Green Arthur Lola vs Powerman Muswell Hillibillies Ultimate Collection The Bootleg Version of 'The Great Lost Kinks Album'
Forget all the bonus stuff on the recent deluxe editions of the albums for now, just take the original tracklisting of each album and go from there

Something Else. gave that 3 spins today. i heard track 2 (death of a clown) before, track 3 (two sisters) was my favourite i guess (instrumentation reminded me of "boy with the blues" just a bit). the record wasnt half bad, but a bit on the boring side imo. beatles > kinks imo, so far.

Lola vs Powerman... is my favourite one of theirs.
I'm Not Like Everybody Else is the first hidden treasure that comes to a mind.
