This has been touched on in the albums of 2012 thread. Indeed a completely poor list. A couple of artists admittedly I've not yet heard but still it doesn't reflect well on British music. Even if I put my own list together I'd struggle to come up with 10 British records that I've really loved that fall into the criteria for the Mercury's.
Even the Richard Hawley record for me was a disappointment. The three prior to this I though were much better records. He just sounds confused what sound he wants for the new record.

As I've said before, the Hawley album is an embarrassment. Out of that list, I'd like to see Django Django get it. I really enjoy their debut, but I don't think it's earth shattering or anything. Surprised to see Field Music included. I love them, but Plumb is far from their best.

As I've said before, the Hawley album is an embarrassment Wow really? I've only just been getting into him through his new one so i've not heard his earlier work. I understand the new ones a bit of a departure from his original sound but too me it sounds fantastic.

Yeah Chrissie's hatred for it I can't understand. I think it's a good record, though I've really loved the three before so this felt like a disappointment.

I've said elsewhere hawley's is the best thing I've heard this year. I've kind of separated it from the last few ones in my mind (all of which I loved, including the 3 songs he did for the whiskey company), and listened to it on its own, and I still find it amazing. To me, it sounds like he decided "screw it, I'm plugging in and going for it" for once and pulled it off. (Would I still him rather do a few more crooner records? Sure, but as an experiment on its own, I love it.)

From that list, Hawley would be my choice, no doubt. Still it is no more than a 3 stars record. He said a friend with he learned to play the guitar had died and he wanted to make a bit of a guitar hero record. So I think this will be a one-off record and he will return to his crooner side soon.
