its just hard to listen to it without thinking, holy fuck this is the new MBV record, but on its on merits on first listen it stands up as quite beautiful.

First listen was underwhelming. Half way through I actually forgot I was listening to the new MBV record though almost all their songs have always taken time for me to digest.

I love it on first listen. I'm chuffed to bits that this record has finally seen the light of day. YEAH KARL?
The thing that stood out for me is how much the new record benefits from having Colm O'Ciosoig's powerhouse drumming. Loveless had to overly rely on stale sounding drum machines. When you see them live, the songs sound twice as good with Colm behind them.

Quite liked it on first listen, In Another Way stood out. And this comes from a guy who never really digested Loveless...

Sounded so much better second time around, a few tracks I wasn't sure about but hopefully this will continue to grow with each listen.

i'm a big big fan on first listen but it did sound a bit like two halves of two different albums put together, i'm hoping it'll begin to click as an individual record more when i put it through headphones. some amazing tracks on here though, and equally amazing that after all this time it still manages to sound fresh.

That's very true Andy. I guess the fact some of these songs could be god knows how many years old doesn't help when trying to make one complete piece. Though I've found its running order kind of strange rather than it being in two halves.
It's no Chinese Democracy thats for sure.

I can completely understand he had to release it like that, as it was supposedly nearly finished back then, but it has same virtues and flaws than Loveless. It's his sound and nobody makes it better than him but it's like Room on Fire being released 20 years after Is This It.
But I don't mean it in a bad way as the result is pretty good, but I just think now he has got ridden of that weight he has carried for too long he's able to release an album of real new music, I'd like to now how would MBV really sound in 2013. Probably not though.

Imagine if he now gets the bug and becomes really prolific and goes all Ryan Adams on us.
Oh great, another My Bloody Valentine record!

It doesn't seem like the most realistic thing in the world, does it? But the only album more painful to make than this one was probably that 24h Flaming Lips song, so it can only be downhill from now on.
