We're linked with superstars completely out of our reach every transfer window. It's tradition. I still mock my mate for getting caught in the Ariel Ortega rumors in the mid nineties. He was also adamant Alan was going to stick it up Tiffany in Eastenders I think both events are mutually exclusive on the music front. I don't think there's many people discussing forming a band and then going 'Ah hang on, what about the X Factor?". Maybe a few dickbags decided to go on X Factor instead of try and form a terrible Kooks re hash band but that's all pretty irreverent

X factor has nothing to do with music, you always see shit musicians moaning on facebook and twitter, especially dreary struggling singer songwriter types who use it to cover the fact that no one is interested in their dreary shite.

I truly despise every single talent show on television. Everything is a competition nowadays. It's dreadful because it sends out a message you have to be good at something (most of the times being a quasi hip dickface with a midget's singing voice is enough) to justify your existence. And these singing contests are even more shallow as most of their contestants have the same lifespan as bet welching prick's credibility. I don't think they are ruining music though, but I do think they're ruining people.

did look at the charts the other week. just curious to see how many sales it took to get to no1 these days. but they don't publish the sales figures anymore. the amount of acts on cowell's sycho label was a bit disturbing.

A little off topic, but I have realized those fake singles every band are giving are ruining a little my experience with anticipating new records. I'm talking about those typical songs posted on soundcloud which are not that good to be a single but serve as a first take on the album. They end being a bit of an anticlimax for me.

Absolutely this. The charts are irrelevant these days, and X Factor and the likes have no bearing on the ability of decent bands to do tours/put out records.

just don't listen to them and listen to better music instead? Well, I do wanna hear the new songs from bands I like. It's just these days the first thing they show is not as good as during the singles era, now those advanced songs are more like something "representative" of the record. A bit of an anticlimax like I said, but it's not like I'm gonna cry on my knees for that.

[/quote] that's exactly what you are doing Martin you fud Anyway, Mr David hit the nail on the head. Good bands/musicians are going to come along no matter if X Factor is around or not. The people like you, me, us that are passionate about our music are never going to bother about who wins X Factor. And on the pther side of the coin the the folk who love X Factor arent going to go to my dive onna tuesday night to see a band supporting some obscure artist and they've found of some music form. X Factor et al isn't even about music, it's a popularity contest.

always like seeing a healthy competition of credible acts and the crap. www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/chart/singlesdepressing top 40 in that respect. barely a guitar band in there.

Eddie, only 13 year old girls buy singles in 2012. The album charts still represent a mix of credible acts and crap but you are never going to have many guitar songs in the singles chart in 2012 simply because nobody buys them anymore.

We all agree about that, but it doesn't stop it from being "depressing"
