Liam’s cutting putdown
On Monday, I was supposed to interview the former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher about his fashion label, Pretty Green. When I turned up to the “exclusive” presentation at the appointed time, it became clear that Gallagher had no idea what had been agreed on his behalf. His minders spoke of him as if he were a special kind of chimpanzee. They couldn’t predict what he might do one moment to the next, but they made it clear that even to get this close was a rare privilege. “This is going to be the best interview of your LIFE, son!” one of them bellowed, before pushing me into a VIP booth.
Having failed to engage the singer of Wonderwall with two questions about clothes, in a desperate attempt to elicit some of his famous badinage I remarked that when I was 14 I asked my local barber to give me a Liam ]Gallagher haircut. “And what did he do?” asked Gallagher. “He gave me the worst haircut of my life,” I said. “You’ve still got it,” he remarked. Then everyone gestured that my time was up.
