So I have the day off work and am bored. Did this a few years back and wanted to see where I'm at now. Having a RYM account makes it a hell of a lot easier.
Started in 1965 as that seems to be the first year where I've listened to a decent handful of records from it. Thought it would be quite interesting to have a think about my favourite lps from each years. I remember trying to do this about 10 years ago and really struggling with some years in the 80s but now I know plenty of top records from then. Also thought it would be fun to reassess some of the more recent years, with for example the SBTRKT album being one I completely missed listening to in the year it came out but is now one of my favourites of the last few years.
Some things I noticed whilst doing it....
2007 is still the best year in recent history for albums I think I have really gone off Vivian Girls and Best Coast at the moment There is definitley a clear trajectory of me being a bit of a try hard twat in the mid 00s and coming back to normal now

I miss threads like this. Awesome work! Here's mine, listed 1, 2 & 3 in the order they are in. I've included EP's too as there is a few which it feels silly not to include when I like them so much more than any other record. A lot of things that were my top 10s of all time a few years ago are no longer even favourites of the year they was released. Got bored of a few things I loved in recent years too.
Whilst there are never any 'bad' years for music (anyone who says that is a nark who needs to hear more music) 2006, 1996 & 1983 are either below par or there's a lot of great records I still need to hear from those years. I've gotten into more 80s stuff since whenever we last did these things but still the 70s is easily my favourite decade. So much diversity in music, so many genres that were at their peak, the best time ever for the album if you ask me.

JP, I'm going to check out some pieces from your list that I've not heard. A lot I've meant to check out & just not gotten around to. I've STILL not given the Birthday Party a proper listen which is ridiculous considering how much I love Nick Cave. Though I'm not sure from what I've heard I'm going to love them, with Nick Cave I prefer him 90s onwards rather than his 80s records.
I'm going to try and check these out, might make it one record a month that I'll spend time time with. I'll call it THE JP CHALLENGE.
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom Robert Wyatt - Ruth is Stranger than Richard Josef K - The Only Fun in Town The Fall - Slates The Birthday Party - Junkyard The Replacements - Let it Be The Fall - The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall Half Man Half Biscuit - Back in the DHSS Arthur Russell - World of Echo Arab Strap - Philophobia Hefner - The Fidelity Wars Four Tet - Rounds
Also Wire's Pink Flag & Lou Reed's Transformer I've heard a few times each but quite some time ago. I wasn't keen on either, but then I was probably still listening to Shed 7 at the time.

If those Fall lps are good enough for Keith to take along to Finsbury Park they're good enough for you to check out. Hope he didn't have to put them in the bin on the way in like he did those cans of whiskey and coke he tried to smuggle in But yeah there's some albums I really love on that list you've just posted of ones you've never really listened to. Likewise there's a fair few in your list I'm not overly familiar with. Will have to have a dig around and check some out. May as well use this thread for posting thoughts on them as lets face it no-one else is going to do a list

Nobody else is fucking sad enough to make one I thought about starting up the Soapbox album club again which was going pretty well until Ben deleted the board. Or maybe the mix-tape exchange. Though, I can't imagine either having enough interest to be worth bothering with nowadays. I think when downloading music became so easy it kind of killed off people exchanging stuff/recommending shit like it used to happen. When we could freely post links & turtle shit for each other there was more people willing to try stuff. Now its 30 seconds of a youtube clip & onto the next thing. Yeah OK, we'll use this thread to suck each other off in. I'm going to start with Arab Strap who I've never given the time of day. I loved that Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat record from a couple of years ago.

Arab Strap are fucking amazing and yeah most people, myself included seem to regard Philophobia as their best. Their songs are pretty sombre but have a dark humour to them at the same time that properly cracks me up.
I haven't heard any of the pre 1963 records you've mentioned and then after that the following I've never listened to...
Solomon Burke - If You Need Me Jorge Ben - Samba Esquema Novo Sam Cooke - Ain't That Good News Johnny Cash - Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American Indian Aretha Franklin - Aretha Now Alice Cooper - Love It to Death Mandingo - The Primeval Rhythm of Life James Brown - The Payback Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby Yabby You - Conquering Lion Kate Bush - The Kick Inside David Bowie - Lodger David Bowie - Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) Kraftwerk - Computerwelt Kim Wilde - Kim Wilde The Milkshakes - After School Session Thee Mighty Caesars - Acropolis Now Smudge - Manilow Shack - Waterpistol Shack - ...Here's Tom With the Weather Shack - The Corner of Miles and Gil Dave Rawlings Machine - A Friend of a Friend Niechęć - Śmierć w miękkim futerku Moon Duo - Circles
and there's several more I've only heard a handful of times. Any of those I've never touched you particularly reccommend as a starting point?

Any of those I've never touched you particularly reccommend as a starting point? The Bowie stuff is essential. That late 70s early 80s period Bowie is just unbelievable. I can't believe it has taken me until recently to fully appreciate it. I'd be really curious to see what you made of Alice Cooper's Love It To Death. People instantly turn their noses up at the thought of him, but back then Alice Cooper was the name of the band rather than a solo artist, the record sounds like the missing link between The Stooges & The Rolling stones, it isn't perfect by any means but I really love it, ballsy rock n roll. Kate Bush in general is worth spending time with, most wouldn't list her debut as her best work so I'm not sure I'd recommend starting here (She gets more 'out there' and into her own as an artist on later records) but the song-craft on there is unbelievable, especially as she wrote half the record when she was about 15. It's my favourite of hers even if it doesn't really define her as an artist like some of her later records. Smudge I sent you a few tracks from a few years ago and you wasn't that keen. The singer has co-wrote a bunch of Evan Dando's best songs & the record sounds exactly like the Lemonheads so predictably I love it. The Billy Childish related stuff I wouldn't rush to hear, not because it isn't any good, but with him if you've heard one you've pretty much heard them all though, if you ever fancy hearing any more Childish then those are good places to go. Mandingo's The Primeval Rhythm of Life is one of them one off kind of records. It was made by two British session musicians. They used a lot of African rhythms & made record that's a mix of Jazz, Funk & a bit of prog. It literally floored me the first time I heard it. The same as Yabby You's Conquering Lion, it's the best reggae record I've ever heard. There's an atmosphere woven into songs like nothing else I've ever heard. Baz checked it out recently too & he also loves it.

Nice one. Yeah Bowie is a weird one in that looking over my list he doesn't feature once. He's someone I still probabl properly need to get into. Obviously I have and am a fan of the most popular stuff like Ziggy, Hunky Dory, Low etc but outside of that I've never really bothered with and even those I've hardly spent any huge periods of time with. I really like his new album too and kinda wish he'd announced a TCOTU gig this year as I'm sure with tickets for that it would have been the catalyst for me to spend loads of time with his stuff. Will have to do it regardless.
Shack are another one who I noticed have several entries on your list. I think I bought HMS Fable years ago, found it quite dull and never bothered with it again. Probably not the record to have tried getting me into them really by the sounds of it. Will have to give them another go one day.

HMS is their attempt at britpop, it's nothing special but has its moments. Waterpistol is the cult classic, real Love vibes with a bit of Stone Roses thrown in. Here's Tom, an overlooked gem, just beautiful.. The other one I listed is good, but it was more to do with that year not being that adventitious for me. My Bowie bandwagon has hit a fence as I've reached the tin Machine period After dealing with a couple of terrible mid 80s records this is testing my patience. I must crack on as I'm really curious to hear his late 90s/early 2000s material. I dig the glam era Bowie but the run of five records from Station to Station to Scary Monsters is where its at.

I should really check out Springsteen properly before he dies too. I remember listening to Nebraska and Born to Run a few years back and think I recall quite liking Nebraska. It's quite handy letting you do all the donkey work with these people who have huge back catologues and then just listening to the ones you've found out are decent.

blanks out the last 2 yrs. i'd be blanking out the last 10 i think. browny points for picking the nightfly though. van halen's debut is a gem as well. despite these stuffy cunts being too cred for eddie's shredding genius.

- Good thread, not gonna do a list though. - Record club was good, mixtape thing was not. - The quotes on this new forum look like shit.

Cheers Barny gr8 thread. I have to say I'm team jp in the formatting war that's going on here, though admittedly I don't have as much to write up as the rest of you. According to RYM, with the exception of 1971 I don't have 3 albums from the same year until 1994 1994 1. Oasis - Definitely Maybe 2. Blur - Parklife 3. Nas - Illmatic 1995 1. (What's The Story) Morning Glory ? 2. GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords 3. Pulp - Different Class 1996 1. Weezer - Pinkerton 2. Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt 3. Belle & Sebastian - Tigermilk 1997 1. Oasis - Be Here Now 2. The Charlatans - Tellin' Stories 3. Blur - Blur 1998 Just listened to Be Here Now again 1999 1. Blink 182 - Enema Of The State 2. The Charlatans - Tellin' Stories 3. Beth Orton - Central Reservation 2000 1. Oasis - Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants 2. PJ Harvey - Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea 3. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 2001 1. The Strokes - Is This It 2. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - B.R.M.C. 3. Jay-Z - The Blueprint 2002 1. The Streets - Original Pirate Material 2. Talib Kweli - Quality 3. The Libertines - Up The Bracket 2003 1. Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell pt. 1 2. Blur - Think Tank 3. Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell pt. 2 2004 1. Kings Of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak 2. Regina Spektor - Soviet Kitsch 3. Annie - Anniemal 2005 1. Dustin's Bar Mitzvah - Dial M For Mitzvah 2. Ryan Adams - 29 3. The Rakes - Capture/Release 2006 1. Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of This Country 2. Graham Coxon - Love Travels At Illegal Speeds 3. Be Your Own Pet - Be Your Own Pet 2007 1. Lucky Soul - The Great Unwanted 2. Tegan and Sara - The Con 3. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver 2008 1. Caitlin Rose - Dead Flowers EP 2. Laura Marling - Alas, I Cannot Swim 3. Jessica Lea Mayfield - With Blasphemy So Heartfelt 2009 1. Tegan and Sara - Sainthood 2. The Rifles - Great Escape 3. Regina Spektor - Far 2010 1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy 2. Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can 3. Robyn - Body Talk 2011 1. Bright Eyes - The People's Key 2. Action Bronson & Statik Selektah - Well Done 3. Yuck - Yuck 2012 1. Japandroids - Celebration Rock 2. Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city 3. Action Bronson & Party Supplies - Blue Chips 2013 so far 1. Tegan and Sara - Hearthrob 2. Caitlin Rose - The Stand-In 3. The Strokes - Comedown Machine I enjoyed doing that! Great way to spend an afternoon where I could otherwise be bettering myself. Funny to think back to some of the ratings and end of the year lists I've done back along, I had the last Bright Eyes album at 2.5 stars at one point and I don't think Kanye's last one even made my top 10 of that year. Subconsciously or not maybe there's a bit of overlistening, overthinking or sometimes even posing that goes into end-of-year lists which doesn't so much with stuff like this, these are just, by-and-large the records we'll want with us for the rest of out lives. I think 2005 & 2007 are my favourite years going by amount of stuff it was hard to leave out. But going by solid top 3's I really love the 9 albums in 2001, 2010 & 2011's

Comedown Machine really is a great record. It's really grown on me in the past month.

Great idea for a topic. Strange to think of the ones that've drifted away and the ones that've stayed the same, eg. I remember being completely mental about both Tin Planet by Space in 1998 and by This Is My Demo by Sway in 2006. On recent listens, both seem pretty ordinary now 2013 (so far) THE BRONX - The Bronx (IV) Peace - In Love My Bloody Valentine - m b v 2012 NAS - Life Is Good Kendrick Lamar - Good Kid, maad City Every Time I Die - Ex-Lives 2011 FRIENDLY FIRES - Pala Katy B - On A Mission Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat - Everything's Getting Older 2010 KANYE WEST - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid Les Savy Fav - Root For Ruin 2009 DE ROSA - Prevention Future Of The Left - Travels With Myself And Another The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart 2008 FRIGHTENED RABBIT - The Midnight Organ Fight Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim No Age - Nouns 2007 THE BIRD AND THE BEEThe Twilight Sad - Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters Burial - Untrue 2006 ARAB STRAP - The Last Romance Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury Alexisonfire - Crisis 2005 BLOC PARTY - Silent Alarm Cut Copy - Bright Like Neon Love Kano - Home Sweet Home 2004 KANYE WEST - The College Dropout The Futureheads Madvillain - Madvillainy 2003 THE BRONX - The Bronx (I) OutKast - Speakerboxxx/The Love Below The Cooper Temple Clause - Kick Up The Fire, And Let The Flames Break Loose 2002 MCLUSKY - Mclusky Do Dallas The Streets - Original Pirate Material Glassjaw - Worship & Tribute 2001 FEEDER - Echo Park Embrace - If You've Never Been Jimmy Eat World - Bleed American 2000 EMINEM - The Marshall Mathers LP Deftones - White Pony Oasis - Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants 1999 FEEDER - Yesterday Went Too Soon The Chemical Brothers - Surrender Death In Vegas - The Contino Sessions 1998 PULP - This Is Hardcore OutKast - Aquemini Arab Strap - Philophobia 1997 DEFTONES - Around The Fur Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space Stereophonics - Word Gets Around 1996 NAS - It Was Written Longpigs - The Sun Is Often Out Manic Street Preachers - Everything Must Go 1995 PULP - Different Class Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...
