I gave this a listen this morning and it was just terrible; it was just so overwhelming and not in a good way.
On a lot of the songs, it's like they're trying to execute too many different ideas without any degree of success and it just becomes a total clusterfuck.

I bet Steve is pretty mad right now.

tbh for an album like this one I'm gonna keep my opinion until it has matured a bit

Oh sure, my opinion could change, but my first impressions are not great.

It's quite fucked up. I'm going to need more time to digest this album.

I still find it too obtuse, but I'm already digging the more easy sounding songs like Plenty of Girls in the Sea and Introspection (although a cover).

They're coming back this year, hopefully they realize for once Time To Pretend is a modern classic and there's nothing wrong with that and stop doing Aphex Twin noises. And when I say modern classic I really mean it: soundcloud.com/hrishihirway/song-exploder-mgmtLoved that interview, it made me appreciate the song even more. It's apparently simple but there's a lot of things going on in there (the weird sounds at the start, the simple arpeggio, the annoying keyboard riff, fake orchestrated parts, that ABBA piano!, the tom tom drum beats...) and it all sticks together wonderfully creating a catchy slice of weird pop fantasy.

I don't think I listened to that album since I said I was going to need more time with it.

Is Oracular Spectacular the most influential rock album of the past 10 years? Was reading a 10 years anniversary piece while listening to it and fuck... It's awesome, I love it. Definitely the help of Dave Friedman was important to get that fully formed sound. Yeah, they learned from the likes of The Flaming Lips, of Montreal or Animal Collective, but this is a different beast. It's funky, it's dancey, it's catchy, but it's still deeply personal, meandering and creative. Like I said, it's a shame they're trying to run away from it. They might have paved the way for endless shitty semi-pop bands (Foster the People, Imagine Dragons?) and opened the doors for other psychedelia lovers (Foxygen, Tame Impala, Temples), but none of them got it THIS right. Because this is modern psychedelia, not just a recreation.
You know Time to Pretend and Kids and probably don't want to hear them ever again, but those songs achieved that success because it couldn't be any other way. A song like Electric Feel sounds like fucking Tame Impala's 3rd record and not only that, but both Arcade Fire and Beck have incredibly similar songs released on 2017. All of them quite worse than the original obviously.
And those are just the simpler songs. Weekend Wars is endless, it never gets old. The Youth and The Handshake grow like mutant vegetables, you don't know what's going to happen but can't stop looking to them (disclaimer: yes, I already do know how they end but stil). Future Reflections! Now I didn't remember very well that one, and it's amazing. Pieces of What is my darling, a lofi acustic Beatles ditty with lovely backing vocals on its second part. Of Moons, Birds & Monsters is Neil Young doing 70s AOR rock from a cubicle in the space. And so on. Sigh.
Good Sunday morning, lads.

Barny, you just attacked LCD Soundsystem fans for being the worst & then you come up with this SHIT about MGMT.
Best thing they ever did was those Oasis covers with a cardboard Liam when Oasis cancelled V last minute.
