gonna rewrite my latitude review as the forum went down fairly soon after i posted my last one.
had an excellent time as usual though it was noticably a bit different this year. a much younger crowd with a load more drunk teens running around than usual but still good vibes overall.
thursday we got there fairly late so i just watched some poetry stuff which was decent enough. met superjohnny too which was a clear highlight.
friday i saw...
the kissaway trail 6.5/10 i quite like these on record but this wasnt their greatest set mostly due to not playing their best songs i think. i preferred them when i saw them a few years back.
here we go magic 6/10 i thought i would like these more after seeing them live but no they still havent properly clicked with me. they have moments of promise and interesting bits but too many of their songs meander on a bit too dull for my liking. not awful though and still ok to watch
yuck 8.5/10 were my first highlight. one of my favourite finds of this year and even better than when i saw them the other month supporting times new viking. cant wait for the album.
bumped into superjohnny again at this point 10/10
alice gold 1/10 saw her whilst sat having some food. was awful.
i blame coco 6/10 ashamed to say i quite enjoyed her set. clearly gonna be massive as she is stings daughter and very poppy but it passed the time decently and even had me drunkenly singing along at times. not something id ever listen to on record mind you.
the middle east 6.5/10 i had been really looking forward to these as i love their song "blood" but they were pretty dull live. disappointing.
luna belle 2/10 shite
tokyo police club 7/10 the kids seemed to love these, loads of moshing and crowd surfing. i quite enjoyed them too. would rather have been watching islet or wild beasts who were on elsewhere at the same time but id seen them both recently and wanted to be at this stage so i could get penalty spot for...
GIRLS 9/10 amazing. fucking love this band. hellhole ratrace was a huge festival moment
the national were then my friday headliner. they were fucking excellent tbf. 8.5/10
then went and saw eddie argos do a midnight set in the poetry arena. a good mix of songs from his 2 main bands with a guitarist and keyboard player. good fun but i started to fall asleep by the end. 7.5/10
saturday i saw...
active child who was ace. 8/10
josie long in the comedy tent next who was disappointing. i like her a lot but most of her set she was in charachter of a chav astronaut and even though a lot of it was improv banter with the audience it still felt safe because she just got laughs from pretending to be a chav. she then did a normal bit about laughing at the tories which was better but still not exactly daring slagging off the tories is it. 6/10
school of seven bells 7/10 were next. not as good as when i saw them in norwich last year as i think they suit the intimate setting far better but still an ace band.
standard fare were who we saw next. now ive loved their debut album this year and its currently in my top 5 of the year but they still have a way to go as a live band. they looked pretty nervous and at times it felt like they needed to rehearse a lot more. was still good though and they have a lot of charm about them. 7.5/10
frightened rabbit next had lots of singalongs and a decent sized crowd. again enjoyable without being mindblowing. 7/10
david ford i decided to see as i was a big easyworld fan in my teens. lets face it though his solo stuff is pretty dull. 5/10
the maccabees were next and are always good value. 7/10
then went to get some food and came back to the main stage to see crystal castles which i actually thought sounded good musically, but alice glass wasnt singing at all because she was too busy crowdfsurfing. then literally just as i got to a decent position alice glass punched a fan in the head for grabbing her tit and was shouting down the mic and stuff and then it was all over 2/10
went and saw a bit of frankie and the heartstrings whilst getting some beers in before belle and sebastian. they were alright, probably gonna get huge. 6/10
belle and sebastian then came on and blew me away. even though id been looking forward to them loads i was a little concerned they wouldnt have the spark to pull off a big headlining performance but i was so wrong. the set was full of hits and they even did a cover of jumping jack flash. never realised what a good frontman stuart murdoch is, he has bags of charisma and loads of banter. 10/10
the final day started off with the strange boys who id seen only a few weeks ago and thought were amazing. they suffered here though from playing on the main stage early on but still put on a good show. 7/10
spectrals were next. another promising young english band who id been looking forward to as they have a sound not too dissimilar to GIRLS. good stuff 8/10
went and saw egyptian hip hop next who id heard a lot of hype about. they were decent enough but nothing to write home about really. 6/10
dirty projectors were next who were good. i think i had too high expectations though so wasnt blown away quite as much as i thought id be. good stuff though. 7.5/10
then saw these new puritans who were a little disappointing and not as good as when id seen them a couple of years back. felt almost a bit kasabiany in places. still got potential and some interesting stuff going on but need to make sure they stay clear of the geezery route. 6.5/10
THE PAINS were next. didnt enjoy them as much as id hoped but no fault of their own. id woken up sunday morning with the sore throat from hell and by this point was feeling quite ill. 10/10 still though but peggy wangs backing vox are fucking horrible live what a hero
darwin deez was the last act i saw. no matter what you say about him you cannot knock his live show. the pains were at the side of the stage watching him whilst eating melon. 8.5/10
went home at this point as the bird had to be up for work at 5 in the morning. wouldnt have minded seeing vampire weekend or grizzly bear who were the headliners but not overly fussed.
great weekend as usual and im sure il be back next year.
