I don't think I've ever felt this gutted about the death of any music icon before. Genuinely saddened by it. The timing of it was such a huge shock. Like most people I've spent the past 2 days listening to his new album and thinking he was an artist reborn. I was even beginning to hope he would play live again. Blackstar will never sound the same now, all the clues about his illness and impending death are so obvious now.

Listening to the new record and imagining Bowie flying away in his space ship whilst singing "where the fuck did monday go?" as Earth slowly gets smaller & smaller.
This is your fucking fault Murphy. How fucking dare you mention that perm-faced piece of shit Stuart Cable in this thread. Go fuck yourself man, choke on Cables fluff you cunt.

I always was under the impression that David Bowie was immortal. Same As ridiculous as it may sound, it always felt like he'd be around forever.

It just doesn't seem right, despite his age I never ever thought of Bowie as this old man. When Roger Daltry or Keith Richards die I'll think it's a shame, then remember they are a 1000 years old & have done nothing of any artistic merit for my entire lifetime. But Bowie's last two records showed how much he still had to give us all as an artist.
Me & Kev always talk about what a sad day it'll be when Neil Young dies, but that's the thing. We know Neil Young is gonna die eventually... the thought of Bowie leaving had never even closed my mind until this morning when I saw the news.
From a extremely selfish point of view, I do wonder if we'll see any more Bowie records in the future. I remember reading an interview with Visconti regarding the Next Day sessions & he said they recorded something like 70 songs.

It dawned on me that there are probably people in the world for who David Bowie is still alive. When they went to sleep, for them, he was still with us in this mortal realm. When they awake, they'll know that he's gone. This makes me happy and saddens me in equal measures.

If you haven't already seen this Bowie interview from 2000 then I suggest you watch it now. In it he basically predicts, with uncanny accuracy, how the internet will affect music and why that could be a good thing. He was always on it.

i think mahoney hit the nail on the head with this that despite being nearly 70, no one ever thought of bowie as aging or an old man. we're aware of the mortality of dylan, young etc but bowie just always seemed this fresh faced thing who kinda was above things such as dying. i can't lie and say he was one of my all time favourites or anything as it was actually only over the last 5 years or so i properly got into him, but this is probably the celebrity death that has knocked me for six more than any other in my lifetime. the only other i remember being similarly shocked by was rik mayall the other year, that was pretty sad. when i got mahoney's text this morning breaking there was no way i was going back to bed, it was just one of those moments i'll always remember and i'm really glad that the tributes he is getting from everyone are as huge as this as he totally deserved it.

Can only echo the thoughts of most people, I've never felt this emotional about the death of a musician ever. I felt so numb this morning, it honestly felt like a different world when I walked out the front door this morning.
He was someone I grew up with, my dad, who likes music, but isn't especially passionate for it loved Bowie, especially the 'glam era', so we had Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Aladdin Sane around the house as kids. But then later, I had my own experiences delving into the more 'artistic/stylistic' elements of his catalogue. Especially Low, Station to Station and Young Americans,I adore those records so much, they each played parts in my formative years and I have many memories of those songs interlocked with friends and great times.
I think the news was even more poignant this morning because of the nature of it, how he has appeared back into the music world with two odd, weird, dark and fantastic songs and then released his best album in years, one we have all been indulging in over the last few days. I popped along to my local record shop yesterday to pick up a copy of the vinyl, which I listened too last night before going to bed. I'd been speaking to people and texting mates yesterday talking about how great the record was and how a 69 year old continues to push himself artistically so much. Only to be woken up first thing this morning to a handful of texts relaying the news. My initial gut rection was that I thought he'd topped himself, it turned out to be even more sombre and it seemed like he played us all. Such a beautiful and courageous goodbye from an inimitable artist.

bowie interview quote from the 70's. www.muhistory.com/from-the-archive-2-mu-response-to-david-bowies-nazi-salute/“Britain is ready for a fascist leader… I think Britain could benefit from a fascist leader. After all, fascism is really nationalism… I believe very strongly in fascism, people have always responded with greater efficiency under a regimental leadership…Adolf Hitler was one of the first rock stars…You’ve got to have an extreme right front come up and sweep everything off its feet and tidy everything up.” remember getting ganged up on by a few on here over clapton one time.

still reeling from monday. there was no one i held higher than bowie, in all honesty. pretty much his entire back catalogue was about loneliness, isolation, wanting to escape...and he was never maudlin about it, he always repackaged it in colourful, innovative and futuristic ways. a true artist in every conceivable sense. he even made his fucking death an impeccable piece of art and i genuinely think his new album is fantastic, my favourite since Scary Monsters. I can't imagine anyone except Bowie bowing out with such fucking perfect grace. There is so much more I want to write about him, but i feel a bit too low (LOLZ) about it all at the moment. Brixton was a beautiful experience on Monday night. Huge fucking vibes.

Yeah, I can't really shake the blues that his passing has brought. Work this week has been a total washout.
